Pablo Larraín’s new film ‘El Conde’ will be released in select UK cinemas on 8th September and on Netflix on 15th September 2023.

The horror satire portrays a universe in which Augusto Pinochet (Jaime Vadell) is a 250-year-old vampire who, tired of being remembered as a thief, decides to die. You can watch the trailer for the film at the top of this article and see the key art below:

‘El Conde’ is a dark comedy/horror that imagines a parallel universe inspired by the recent history of Chile. The film portrays Augusto Pinochet, a symbol of world fascism, as a vampire who lives hidden in a ruined mansion in the cold southern tip of the continent. Feeding his appetite for evil to sustain his existence. After two hundred and fifty years of life, Pinochet has decided to stop drinking blood and abandon the privilege of eternal life. He can no longer bear that the world remembers him as a thief. Despite the disappointing and opportunistic nature of his family, he finds new inspiration to continue living a life of vital and counterrevolutionary passion through an unexpected relationship.

“I have been imagining Pinochet as a vampire for years, as a being that never stops circulating through history, through our imagination and our nightmares. Vampires don’t die or disappear, nor do the crimes and thefts of a dictator who never knew justice”, explains Larraín about the concept behind the story, and adds: “The brutal impunity that Pinochet represents had to be faced directly, showing him for the first time face to face. To do so, we have used the language of satire and political farce”.

In the words of Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Latin America: “Our commitment to Chile and Chilean filmmakers is clearly evident with ‘El Conde’, the new film by Pablo Larraín, whose vision and universe bring us a unique, hypnotic and powerful film, like all of his cinematography. We are proud to work with Pablo on this production that will premiere in the official section of the Venice International Film Festival, before reaching our members around the world. From Chile and Latin America to the world”.

‘El Conde’ stars renowned Chilean actors Jaime Vadell, Gloria Münchmeyer, Alfredo Castro and Paula Luchsinger, who are joined by Catalina Guerra, Marcial Tagle, Amparo Noguera, Diego Muñoz and Antonia Zegers, playing the Count’s daughters and sons.

The movie was filmed entirely in Chile on locations that are in four different regions of the country, including the former Oazy Harbour ranch located in the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica, where they filmed in the middle of the austral winter and where the Count’s refuge was brought to life.

The post ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Collector’s Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray review appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

]]>
I’m generally not one of those people who gets angry about remakes. You know the kind, frequently found in the comment sections under every news story about the latest Hollywood reboot. My feeling has always been that most remakes begin with the best of intentions, and should be given the benefit of the doubt. That being said, when you decide to do a new adaptation of one of the most famous novels ever written, which has already been made into one of the greatest films of all time, the margin for error shrinks somewhat.

Edward Berger’s bombastic reimagining of ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, the latest adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s landmark novel is a very well put together film. Technically, it is an extremely impressive rendering of the hell on Earth that the Western Front surely was. However, you can feel it straining to be ‘Come and See’ when it should be trying harder to be an adaptation of ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, which it really isn’t in anything other than name.

The novel, and the masterpiece 1930 film directed by Lewis Milestone are not just anti-war, they vividly capture the isolating and detaching impact war has on soldiers, and how the toll it takes on them is so profound they can never truly return to their old lives. This version just revels in the chaos and carnage. And in fairness, I can see why so many people have responded positively. I’m not sure I understand all the Oscars and BAFTAs, but I do get why audiences would be blown away by the visceral action Berger and his DP James Friend have conjured.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Credit: Netflix

However, the structural tweaks Berger and his co-writers have made, dramatically reduce the emotional and thematic heft of the story. The plot follows Paul (Felix Kammerer), a young man who excitedly enlists in the German army. He and his friends share a naively romantic view of war, which is soon crushed when they are deployed to the corpse-strewn hellscape of the Western Front. In between the deafening battles, and periods of calm depicting Paul and his starving comrades trying to steal food from nearby French farms, there is a new subplot about the political efforts to bring about the armistice.

These new sequences, which are likely there to add some tension as well as laying some historic breadcrumbs for what happened in Germany in the 20s and 30s, do in fact add very little. Most noticeable however are the changes to the ending, which I won’t go into, and the decision to remove arguably the most poignant sequence from the source material, where Paul briefly returns home whilst on leave. Presumably the filmmaker wanted their version to be different, and they have succeeded, by completely missing the point. It might be visually stunning, but it is an ultimately hollow adaptation.

It has however been given a very handsome 2-disc limited edition 4K UHD release, in the mediabook format. The mediabook packaging comes with a 24-page booklet that includes ‘Sharing the German Perspective’ – a conversation with director Edward Berger and ‘A Machine of Death Unlike Any Experienced Before’ – an interview with historian and professor Daniel Schönpflug on the historical background of ‘All Quiet on the Western Front.’

Both the 4K and Blu-ray discs include a feature length audio commentary with the director, trailers, and a behind the scenes documentary that goes into great detail on how the epic sets were made.

The post ‘Obsession’ preview: Netflix’s erotic thriller sticks close to the source material taking far too few risks appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

The announcement that Netflix was working on an adaptation of Josephine Hart’s classic novel ‘Damage’ is one that left me pondering what, if anything, a remake of sorts could offer that the 1992 film from director Louis Malle, which starred Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche, didn’t already deliver.

This four-part limited series, which arrives on Thursday 13th April, stars Richard Armitage as William and Charlie Murphy as Anna, the woman he becomes obsessed with who is dating his son Jay (Rish Shah). While the series has been given a modern makeover – in this iteration William is married to Ingrid (Indira Varma), a woman of Indian heritage, and he’s a surgeon rather than a politician while Anna isn’t French or the daughter of a British diplomat – the storyline remains largely the same as the original film version.

Obsession

William and Anna are instantly attracted to one another after meeting at an evening soirée, and their relationship quickly turns into a sexual power struggle as they meet in a sparse apartment to satisfy their urges. All the while, Anna continues to date William’s son and the threat of their affair being discovered hangs over their heads, especially as someone seems to know what they’re up to behind closed doors.

The set-up for the series is sizzling enough with Armitage and Murphy sparking off one another from the moment they meet. Where the series falters is that neither William nor Anna are even slightly likeable. William’s selfish decisions to prioritise his own sexual desires, at the expense of his family, and the two-dimensional nature of Anna’s character as a femme fatale makes it hard for the viewer to care about either of them. The script does nothing to try and make their actions understandable.

Obsession
Credit: Netflix

Spread across four episodes, the thin plot feels far too stretched. Time is filled in each episode with explicit sex scenes, but after the initial surprise at just how far the series chooses to go, it starts feeling repetitive. The viewer is painfully aware that William and Anna are having an affair so do we really need to see lengthy sex scenes every episode? The answer is not really because they don’t really add to the overall story and the whole thing starts feeling more ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ than the original ‘Damage’ film.

‘Obsession’ starts well but it soon loses steam. Poorly written lead characters, and forgettable supporting players, make this nothing more than an erotic drama that fizzles rather than sizzles. Armitage and Murphy do their best to carry the series, but they aren’t given very much to work with. Given that both are capable actors, that’s a real shame. If you haven’t seen ‘Damage’, or read the original book, you might find enough to enjoy here but if you have, you’re better sticking with those.

‘Obsession’ launches on Netflix on Thursday 13th April 2023. Watch the trailer below:
