For the most part, we raise boys to believe that masculinity is an identity when it’s not. It’s an energy.”

The film is produced by Leopold Hughes and Ben LeClair for T-Street, Tim White, Trevor White and Allan Mandelbaum for Star Thrower. The Executive Producers are Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson for T-Street, Chloe Domont, Anđelka Vlaisavljević. Produced in Partnership with MRC

Speaking to Vanity Fair, director Domont says, “Why is it that even today, with all the progress that we’ve made, a man’s success is a win for the relationship, but when it’s the other way around, it feels like a threat? It felt like something that so many of us experience but are afraid to talk about and to confront.”

‘Oppenheimer’ review https://entertainment-focus.com/2023/07/20/oppenheimer-review/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 17:10:14 +0000 https://publish.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1345452 Christopher Nolan delivers a spectacular movie-going experience in 70mm IMAX.

The post ‘Oppenheimer’ review appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

]]>
Christopher Nolan is one man who knows about the true importance of cinema. His latest movie is a masterclass of the medium, delivering one of the grandest cinematic experiences you’ll ever have. Cillian Murphy plays the infamous J. Robert Oppenheimer – the father of the atomic bomb. The film charts his life as he is headhunted after his work on the Manhattan Project, to help the US beat Nazi Germany to creating a weapon of mass destruction that could be the means to end all wars. Nolan can deliver absorbing and high-stakes drama easily, but in ‘Oppenheimer’ the visionary director looks to have taken a genuine step up – and in the process has cemented his place as one of cinema’s greatest auteurs.

The cast is as jam-packed with talent as you’d expect, with Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Jack Quaid, Josh Hartnett, Alden Ehrenreich, Rami Malek, Olivia Thirlby, David Dastmalchian, Dane DeHaan, Benny Safdie, Jason Clarke, Matthew Modine, Casey Affleck and Tom Conti just some of the names on-show. It’s a staggering ensemble, but when you have a genius talent like Nolan’s, the stars all clamour to work for you.

Of the impressive ensemble, obviously Cillian Murphy stands out. He is in practically every frame of this movie and the long-time Nolan collaborator is finally getting his time in the limelight. Murphy has always been an exceptional talent – of that there is no doubt – but ‘Oppenheimer’ gives him the platform to truly command the screen in a way he hasn’t had before. The entire movie hinges on his performance, and he delivers an earth-shattering portrayal of a brilliant, flawed man in conflict with himself and his situation.

Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt are sensational in this film. As the loves of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life, Pugh’s portrayal of Jean Tatlock and Blunt’s stoic but strong performance as Kitty Oppenheimer captivate the screen. The dialogue of this film is utterly absorbing, and their performances against Murphy give the story huge emotional weight and purpose. Elsewhere, Robert Downey Jr. is sensational as Lewis Strauss. He even cites ‘Oppenheimer’ as the greatest film he’s been involved in, which speaks volumes.

The film doesn’t waste a single performance of its ensemble either. ‘Oppenheimer’ is an actors dream project. It’s a film full of layered characters and performances. Every single cast member delivers a memorable turn here, nothing seems superfluous or extravagant. When posed with the question of if there was much footage that didn’t make the final cut of the film, lead actor Cillian Murphy said no, because what you see on the page is what Chris Nolan wants you to see onscreen as the whole film. There’s no fat here – he’s structured and cut ‘Oppenheimer’ to its most complete and purest form on script and before it’s in front of any camera, and that’s quite a remarkable thing given the scope of the story here.

I fly the flag of IMAX frequently because I truly believe that this format is unparalleled in its presentation of cinema. As we all know, Christopher Nolan’s pioneering use of IMAX cameras is a large reason to why this format is so treasured, so to have ‘Oppenheimer’ presented in 70mm IMAX is a staggering endeavour that demands your time and attention. It’s hard to put into words quite what 70mm IMAX brings to the moviegoing experience, but it’s safe to say that its magical. If you find a screening in this format (and there aren’t many given the demands on the screens available to showcase this prestige format) then go and see ‘Oppenheimer’ as its auteur intended. It’s a completely unique experience.

‘Oppenheimer’ is grandeur filmmaking of the highest order and a real statement of intent on how Christopher Nolan’s legacy will be remembered. It’s his most accomplished film to date, with demonstrable proof that he has learnt from his past missteps. Dialogue – in particular – is played to perfection here. And after the mixed reception ‘Tenet’ received on its lockdown release, it’s nice to see Nolan back on top with a project that only he could have delivered. If you long to return to the days of cinema where films were composed of exceptional guile and tremendous endeavour, then ‘Oppenheimer’ is for you. It’s a ‘proper’ film, for want of a better term, and we should be thankful that there are filmmakers of this ilk, and with this vision, who are willing to champion the old ways in such a determined fashion. Expect ‘Oppenheimer’ to be an awards season frontrunner next year too.

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Jack Quaid, Josh Hartnett, Alden Ehrenreich, Rami Malek, Olivia Thirlby, David Dastmalchian, Dane DeHaan, Benny Safdie, Jason Clarke, Matthew Modine, Casey Affleck, Tom Conti Director: Christopher Nolan Writer: Christopher Nolan, Kai Bird, Martin Sherwin Certificate: 15 Duration: 180 mins Released by: Universal Release date: 21st July 2023

‘Cocaine Bear’ review https://entertainment-focus.com/2023/02/24/cocaine-bear-review/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 10:55:03 +0000 https://publish.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1340046 It's a bear. On cocaine!

The post ‘Cocaine Bear’ review appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

]]>
With such a huge media frenzy surrounding the promotional campaign for ‘Cocaine Bear’ it’s not unreasonable to suggest that this could’ve been the cult film of the year. It had a fantastic trailer, a decent tag-line (Get in Line) and an impressive ensemble. However upon reflection, the film really struggles with its slender 95 minute runtime and ultimately it’s a forgettable romp with only a few brief moments of genuine delight. This is a huge shame as there was a lot of potential here.

Loosely based on real events, this story is certainly bonkers, and something so crazy it can only have happened in real life. An airborne shipment of drugs is dumped into the vast forests of Georgia from a light aircraft. The big bricks of cocaine are scattered across the wilderness, and a wild black bear soon gets into one of the bricks. Now coked-up and looking for his next hit, the bear runs rampage as groups of local people encounter the beast – including a mother looking for some lost children, a park ranger, a local youth gang, and the criminals who own the cocaine and are looking to salvage their product at any cost.

It should be said that ‘Cocaine Bear’ does have good moments, with the initial set-up handled well, and the brief introductions to the principal characters handled with decent brevity. The first encounters with the bear are also very good, but after a superb scene with an emergency ambulance crew (the film’s best sequence by far), it becomes apparent very quickly that the rest of the narrative just can’t keep up.

The middle-to-end of the film is pondering and slow – you’ll clock-watch a fair bit, and that’s unforgivable for a 95min film that drags incredibly. You also realise that the budget has clearly peaked in the opening sequences, with the rest of the film just dialogue-heavy scenes with characters you don’t really care about. A few of the bear’s early casualties would have been better-placed surviving the carnage for longer, if just to keep things interesting.

The cast can’t be faulted for this and are all decent enough. The late, great Ray Liotta steals his scenes as Syd, the increasingly frustrated drugs trafficker on the hook for the missing coke. This was his last feature film, and Liotta dominates his set-pieces, reminding us what a huge loss he is to the industry. Alden Ehrenreich and O’Shea Jackson Jr deserved much better material as two gang-runners (one reluctantly) who are tasked with tracking down the missing shipment. Keri Russell is good as Sari, a nurse looking for her daughter Dee Dee (The Florida Project’s Brooklynn Prince) and her school-bunking friend Henry (Christian Convery). In fact, the kid’s story is handled quite haphazardly, with big narrative holes and plot points that are never explored properly.

The majestic Margot Martindale is wonderful as Park Ranger Liz, who is less worried about her job and more interested in flirting with the brilliant Jesse Tyler Ferguson – cameoing here as hilarious wig-wearing animal welfare expert named Peter. He should have been in this film for much longer. Everyone’s favourite warrior from Game of Thrones, Kristofer Hivju is solid as a foreign tourist who first encounters the bear. Kahyun Kim and Scott Seiss are excellent as paramedics introduced into the carnage. Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Ayoola Smart’s characters are wasted, especially given their set-up at the start.

For a film called ‘Cocaine Bear’, there’s not enough bear for me onscreen. The opening sequences burn through a lot of the best bits very quickly and the film quickly loses momentum and ideas. ‘Snakes on a Plane’ remains the best modern example of a cult film of this type which delivers on every front. Sadly ‘Cocaine Bear’ is nowhere near as good. Even that outstanding ‘John West’ salmon commercial 23 years ago of a bear and a fisherman having a fight is better than this film. ‘Cocaine Bear’ is a real missed opportunity given the talent involved.

Cast: Keri Russell, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ray Liotta, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Brooklynn Prince, Christian Convery, Margo Martindale, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju, Hannah Hoekstra, Kahyun Kim, Scott Seiss, Matthew Rhys, Ayoola Smart, Aaron Holliday, J.B. Moore, Leo Hanna Director: Elizabeth Banks Writer: Jimmy Warden Certificate: 15 Duration: 95 mins Released by: Universal Release date: 24th February 2023

Brave New World‘, the Sky Original adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s iconic 1932 novel debuts on Sky and NOW TV today.

All 9 episodes are available on demand and it’s the perfect binge-watch to get you through the miserable weather predicted for the weekend. In the video at the top of the article, we chat to stars Harry Lloyd, Jessica Brown Findlay and Alden Ehrenreich about the series, the dynamic between their characters and the modernisation of Huxley’s original vision.

‘Brave New World’ imagines a utopian society that has achieved peace and stability through the prohibition of monogamy, privacy, money, family, and history itself.

As citizens of New London, Bernard Marx (Harry Lloyd) and Lenina Crowne (Jessica Brown Findlay) have only ever known a rigid social order, a perfect pharmaceutical called Soma, and a culture of instant gratification and ubiquitous sex. Curious to explore life beyond the strictures of their society, the two New Worlders embark on a vacation to the Savage Lands, where they become embroiled in a harrowing and violent rebellion. Bernard and Lenina are rescued by John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich), who escapes with them back to New London. John’s arrival in the New World soon threatens to disrupt its utopian harmony, leaving Bernard and Lenina to grapple with the repercussions. The three become entwined in a fraught relationship that awakens them to the dangers of their own conditioning.

The series also stars Joseph Morgan, Hannah John-Kamen, Sen Mitsuji, Nina Sosanya and Demi Moore.

Solo: A Star Wars Story review https://entertainment-focus.com/2018/05/24/solo-a-star-wars-story-review/ Thu, 24 May 2018 09:16:46 +0000 https://www.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1190301 Alden Ehrenreich steps into the shoes of Star Wars legend Han Solo.

The post Solo: A Star Wars Story review appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

]]>
It’s been a troubled road to the screen but Solo: A Star Wars Story has finally arrived in cinemas with the latest Star Wars off-shoot looking to inject some much-need goodwill into the franchise after The Last Jedi divided audiences. This is a slightly different beast in that Solo: A Star Wars Story is a film that you can enjoy without any back-story. It’s designed as a standalone film but don’t be surprised if a sequel or two ends up happening because the solid groundwork is here.

Solo is an origin story of everyone’s favourite Star Wars character Han Solo. We join a young Han (Alden Ehrenreich) as he tries to leave a troubled life behind. Along with his girlfriend Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) the two try to escape a life of criminality on the planet Corellia. They get separated but Han vows to return when he’s able to rustle up enough currency and a ship to make a new life for them both. In order to do that, he navigates the underworld and joins a group of rag-tag pirates lead by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) along with a wookie named Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo). They have to pull off a daring mission for local crime lord Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) that will have grave repercussions for everyone if they fail.

[brid video=”229244″ player=”531″ title=”Solo A Star Wars Story Official Trailer”]

When the original directing duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the project due to ‘creative differences’ a safe pair of hands was called upon to steady the ship and handle some reshoots. Ron Howard is a safe director; he knows how to handle a film of this scale and ends up delivering a matinee movie that’s massively enjoyable to watch. It would have been nice to see what Lord and Miller’s interpretation was but given the upheaval, its remarkable that Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out as so enjoyable.

As an origin story it doesn’t scratch too deep and that’s a shame. Instead we have a linear adventure yarn that doesn’t offer many surprises but that does the basics exceptionally well. I was ok with that; others won’t be, so your enjoyment will squarely hinge on your expectations going into this movie. And on that note, seeing someone play Han Solo other than Harrison Ford is just plain weird. But I made my peace with this a long time ago, and acknowledging that no-one will ever top Ford’s performance does help you enjoy this film a lot more. That’s also not to disparage Alden Ehrenreich performance – he is actually really good as the charming rogue and does exceptionally well leading the film. He also never makes his performance an impression of Ford, which is welcome.

The cast are all great and work off the tireless effort Alden Ehrenreich puts in as Han. Emilia Clarke adds a nice air of grace to the cast, Donald Glover is a new fan-favourite for his portrayal of Lando Calrissian and the dynamic conjured up between Joonas Suotamo’s Chewbacca and Ehrenreich’s Han is the main reason the whole project works. Their dynamic is awesome and carries the responsibility of the film very well. Paul Bettany steals his scenes as Dryden Vos, a role that very nearly was completely CGI with Michael K. Williams voicing it before a scheduling conflict meant he couldn’t continue. Bettany in psycho mode is always worth your time and money and he’s great here, bouncing off the walls with conviction and menace.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a very entertaining summer blockbuster that evokes just the right kind of nostalgia for this franchise. After the bitter taste left by the backlash of The Last Jedi, it’s nice to go into a Star Wars universe film that’s purely focused on delivering a fun ride whilst setting up a sequel or two that would be very welcome. It has issues, it doesn’t really delve into Han’s back-story enough and the plot does run with convention a few too many times but on the whole this is a very satisfying ride. And it’s worth the admission price alone for one massive moment towards the very end that will get you on your feet cheering.

IMAX is also the best way to experience the magic in a cinema. The clarity and scale of the IMAX presentation really lends itself perfectly to a film like Solo: A Star Wars Story. It’s vibrant and energetic and makes every scene pop onscreen, especially the breathtaking finale that features the Millennium Falcon. Check out all the trailers, posters and clips from Solo: A Star Wars Story and 10 fun facts about Alden Ehrenreich.

1. It started with a Bat Mitzvah and Steven Spielberg…

Steven Spielberg was once given a tape by his daughter where she performed a comedy-skit with another unknown young actor… this person turned out to be Alden Ehrenreich.

Spielberg loved the tape so much that he got the novice actor an agent. In an interview for ET Online Spielberg added: ‘I didn’t know he was going to rogue [into] drama. He was so funny in this video, I thought, ‘I have found the next really funny comedian. But most of his choices have been in drama and people don’t know how really funny he is.’

2. Starting with a Bang!

Although Alden’s connection to Steven Spielberg led him to being cast as the new Han Solo today, it didn’t seem like it took a big body of work for the actor to show his true skills. Two small appearances in two of the biggest shows on US TV gave him the starting point to his filmmaking career. He appeared as Ben Collins in one episode (“Wendigo”) from the first season of Supernatural and in 2006, he played the role of Sven in a Season 7 episode (“Built to Kill: Part 2”) of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

3. …and then the Big Bang

Out of the 10 motion pictures he has worked on in his Hollywood career, he has already worked with Hollywood most renowned Directors.

His first and second film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Tetro (2009) and Twixt (2011). Other directors include the incredible South Korean director known for the Vengeance Trilogy Chan-wook Park, Woody Allen in Blue Jasmine (2013), The Coen Brothers in “Hail, Caesar!” (2016), Warren Beatty in “Rules Don’t Apply” (2016) and now Ron Howard in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”227461″ player=”531″ title=”Han Meets Lando SOLO A Star Wars Story”]

4. Zero degrees of Ford-Coppola

Alden Ehrenreich previously worked with Francis Ford Coppola in both Tetro (2009) and Twixt (2011). George Lucas belonged in the era/group classified as the ‘The Movie Brats’ which extended between the 1960s – 1980s alongside with a few big other giant film directors such as Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, Paul Schrader, John Milius and Francis Ford Coppola.

Reportedly in interviews, Lucas has expressed his admiration for the way Coppola convinced Warner Brothers into funding Apocalypse Now (1979) into production, and partially based the character of Han Solo on him. Francis Coppola has also directed Harrison Ford in two films, “The Conversation” (1974) and Apocalypse Now.

5. With a little help from my friends

In 2009, he co-founded the theater/film company, The Collectin, with friend and actor Zoë Worth. The Collectin is a group of actors, writers, producers and directors who collaborate on films and performances and who ‘strive to tailor every piece we produce toward the strengths of our specific artists’.

6. A tad on the short side

Alden is 5 foot 9 inches tall (1,76 m), which makes him 3 inches shorter than Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford is 6 foot 1’’ tall (1,85 m).

7. Everyone loves Alden

Although the original two directors that took on the Han Solo film project (Lord & Miller) had parted ways with the production, paving the way for Oscar winner Ron Howard to step onboard, it seems that Alden had beaten a lot of strong candidates to the coveted role. It’s difficult to pin-point the exact number of actors to have auditioned for the role.

In a Vogue article from December 2015, Alden wasn’t even on the shortlist. There are rumors that it had reached an outrageous 3 thousand actors. But according to the original two-man director team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ‘The first guy we saw was the best for the part’ – Alden got booked as Han Solo.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”227462″ player=”531″ title=”” SOLO A Star Wars Story”]

8. Alden shot first (his mouth off)

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, he has revealed that Solo: A Star Wars Story might not be a standalone film, and that he is contractually signed up for another 2 films: ‘I don’t know if that’s officially, uh, public. But—yeah’ he said. Oh well; that’s not the worst spoiler in the galaxy.

9. Hail, Alden!

Although hitting it big with the young adult group having starred in Beautiful Creatures (2013), his real breakthrough acting role came with the Joel and Ethan Coen film Hail, Caeser!. He told Rolling Stone magazine about his persistence in trying to get an audition with the brothers and once he finally booked the gig, it was his hardest role to play yet;

‘I don’t think the Coen brothers had any idea of who I was,” My agent sent me the script, and I read it and just loved it. I asked if I could audition, and we were told that I really wasn’t right for the part. So, we just asked again, and [the Coens’ people] said, ‘You can make a tape.’ And then I asked again if I could come in, and they said okay. I went and read for the casting director, and then she had me come back and read for the Coens twice. As soon as I got the part I was doing horseback riding, trick-roping, gun-twirling, guitar. And the spaghetti lasso, which was the hardest’.

10. A True Cinephile

In an interview with Coming Soon, Alden told the online magazine: ‘When I was a little kid, my parents would show me Marx Brothers films and westerns and stuff like that. That’s where all my desire to be an actor comes from, and probably most of my understanding of acting comes from for sure. I love movies’. We do too Alden!

Solo: A Star Wars Story will soon be hitting cinemas everywhere. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as our iconic hero Han Solo, we follow the early adventures of everyone’s favourite Star Wars character.

Filling the shoes of screen legend Harrison Ford will be no easy task but we are hopeful that this new film does his legacy justice, as we take on new adventures with Han and Chewbacca.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been and gone so fans are already getting excited about the next film in the Star Wars universe.

The prequel based around the popular character of Han Solo, promises to fill in some of the gaps that happened before the first Star Wars film.

As we approach the release of the film this month, we’ve rounded up a few key facts to know before we once again travel to a galaxy far, far away!

Here are 5 reasons why we think the Solo: A Star Wars Story will be unmissable…

1. Alden Ehrenreich

Alden Ehrenreich is a great actor; it’s as simple as that. He has natural charm and charisma in bucket loads. The last trailer really gave forth a sense of him capturing the essence of Harrison Ford’s iconic portrayal of Han Solo. His accent seems spot-on too, and with the support of an amazing ensemble including Paul Bettany, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson, Ehrenreich will be the best thing in the movie.

2. It’s a Space-Western

Plot details are scarce right now but the studio has described Solo: A Star Wars Story as being a space western. What’s not to love about that?! Solo has also been a character that strives on the conflict at hand so this set-up lends itself perfectly to the success of the character and the film as a whole. A space western will also provide lots of opportunity to dazzle us with action set-pieces. The last trailer showcased a few fantastic scenes that look like they’ll take our breath away.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”223095″ player=”531″ title=”Solo A Star Wars Story Official Trailer”]

3. Ron Howard

Granted, the departure of Phil Lord and Chris Miller was very unfortunate, especially given the timing. I would have loved to have seen a fully-realised Lord & Miller Solo movie but Ron Howard is a safe pair of hands. A lot of the final film that we will see onscreen come May 24th will be to their initial vision. Ron Howard does know how to do spectacle and he has a keen eye for a shot. He would have no doubt, brought the set back together after the high profile dismissals and got the vibe right again.

He might not be everyone’s cup of tea but Ron Howard has undoubted talent behind the camera… plus he might also throw in an Arrested Development gag for good measure like the Russo Brothers did in Avengers: Infinity War.

4. Star Wars universe films are better than the main movie strand

This is a controversial one, and we only really have one movie to go on, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is better than Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There’s a freedom to the branch-away Star Wars movies that somehow lets them embrace the past whilst also delivering a solid and entertaining adventure in itself. The Clone Wars also proves this. In many ways, no-one really knows what to expect with Solo: A Star Wars Story so it will have to go a long way to disappoint the core fans.

5. Lando Calrissian

Donald Glover is a megastar on the rise and it looks like he could steal this film. The ad campaign has been superb in teasing all of the main characters but it’s Lando’s poster that raises the most expectation. Having consulted with screen legend Billy Dee Williams on his approach to the character, expect Glover to have some of the movie’s best lines and a swagger and charm to rival Han Solo himself.

After the teaser that dropped during last night’s Superbowl, a first look, full trailer has been released for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy.

Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

The trailer looks to have some interesting moments, especially involving the Millennium Falcon.

We also have proper looks at both Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, who will make the core trio of this story a success.

With director Ron Howard a safe pair of hands for this franchise, we won’t have long to wait for Solo to land in cinemas.

Hail, Caesar! DVD review https://entertainment-focus.com/2016/07/11/hail-caesar-dvd-review/ Mon, 11 Jul 2016 11:15:05 +0000 http://www.entertainment-focus.com/?p=898751 An all-star cast unites for the Coen Brothers latest effort.

The Coen Brothers return for more off-beat humour in this hilarious but slight effort. Rarely has the golden era of Hollywood been so accurately portrayed, with George Clooney perfectly cast as Baird Whitlock, a huge studio star who gets kidnapped and held to ransom by a mysterious group of men with a secret agenda.

Enter the studio’s ‘fixer’ Eddie Mannix (a sensational Josh Brolin); a man responsible for handling every dark secret the studio is trying to hide. As well as cleaning up all manner of official studio indiscretions, Mannix is also struggling with a lucrative job offer that will take him away from the Hollywood circus he so loves. Brolin is a real joy to watch and is the main reason why the film succeeds.

The attention to detail here is staggering, with Hail, Caesar! paying perfect homage to a much-loved, bygone era of filmmaking. The tone always keeps things ticking over nicely, even though the story loses momentum towards the end. The Coen Brothers unmistakable brand of humour works exceptionally well in this environment, with ridiculous situations and events that really utilise their razor-sharp wit.

This ensemble is amazing too with Channing Tatum delivering a sensational musical number midway through the film that could easily sit alongside the all-time greats. A scene-stealing turn from Ralph Fiennes as director Laurence Laurentz is a particular highlight as are his interactions with Alden Ehrenreich as Hollywood new golden boy Hobie Doyle. Ehrenreich perfectly captures that star-making essence and innocence of the era and is an utter joy to watch.

Being a Coen brothers film, there are great little cameos to be found in almost every scene. Scarlett Johansson is brilliant as a gorgeous starlet with the mouth of a sailor while Tilda Swinton delights in a double-role as duelling, gossip columnist twin-sisters. Veronica Osorio gets hearts fluttering, Jonah Hill features in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo and even Frances McDormand shows up for a memorable turn.

Hail, Caesar! certainly has one of the best ensembles you’ll see this year. The story is pleasant and engaging but ultimately there isn’t much to it. You’ll realise this about half-way along and then you’ve got a choice to make… let it bug you or just go along for the ride and enjoy the craziness. I did the later and enjoyed the journey a lot more.
