Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) is a 17-year-old high school student who lives with his father Harold (James Hampton) and is given a hard time by his peers for being distinctly average. A member of the school’s hopeless basketball team, Scott becomes alarmed when he notices changes in his temperament and his body. Discovering that he’s inherited the curse of the werewolf, like his father, Scott embraces his new identity when it brings fame and popularity with it.

I remember absolutely loving ‘Teen Wolf’ when I was a kid. The film was originally released in 1985 and it proved to be a moderate hit at the box office. At the time, Michael J. Fox was very much a star on the rise having transitioned from TV roles to the big screen. It was with some excitement that I watched the film again all these years on ahead of its new reissue on DVD and Blu-ray, and honestly it’s not quite the film I remember it to be. Essentially, ‘Teen Wolf’ is an allegory about going through puberty and trying to figure out where you fit in when you’re a teenager. It’s something every single person goes through and it varies as to how much of a hard time you endure during your teenage years.

For Scott, he’s desperate to impress popular girl Pamela (Lorie Griffin) who is dating one of the school’s jocks and couldn’t be less interested in him. While Scott is mooning over Pamela, he’s completely unaware that his friend Boof (Susan Ursitti) is crushing on him hard. Once he embraces his ability to transform into a werewolf, that changes everything with Pamela and the popular kids falling over themselves to be friends with him. Like any young person, Scott is totally oblivious to the fickle nature of the teenagers around him, and his cockiness starts to get the better of him.

Perhaps what surprised me the most on my rewatch of ‘Teen Wolf’, is just how little actually happens. The story is surprisingly simple and there’s no real attempt to understand why Scott and his father are inflicted with the curse. That plot development is simply stated as fact and the film focuses on the hijinks of Scott and his best friend Stiles (Jerry Levine), leaving everything pretty surface deep. If Scott’s not partying, he’s on the basketball court but there’s not really any big hurdle for him to overcome and the instant embracing of him as a werewolf, which is oddly not questioned by anyone, means the film lacks any real stakes.

Michael J. Fox gives a reliably good performance, and that’s really what saves the film. Fox has always been a magnetic movie star and in his early roles he delivers everything with charm and gusto. As Scott, he manages to make good use of his comedic timing and he really is the best thing about the film. Jerry Levine as Stiles is strong too, giving a wildly flamboyant performance that feels authentic to the tone of the film.

For this release there’s a comprehensive documentary included as an extra called ‘Never. Say. Die. The Story of Teen Wolf’, which features new interviews with some of the cast and crew and it takes a look at the making of the film and its legacy. The original theatrical trailer is also included on the release.

It’s incredible to think that ‘Teen Wolf’ provided the inspiration for the 2011 series of the same name (which actually bears very little resemblance to the source material). Even more incredible to think is that ‘Teen Wolf’ is often fondly remembered by people like me, in their 40s, as one of the great teen films of the 80s. My rewatch informed me that my memories were somewhat unreliable (although the high definition transfer definitely scrubs the film up nicely) and that sadly ‘Teen Wolf’ is a very average movie elevated only by the performances of Fox and Levine. Perhaps I should have left this one in my childhood?

Teen Wolf may be heading to an end on MTV but the characters will live on with the release of new figures from Funko.

Central characters Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) have been rendered as Pop! vinyl figures. Fans will be able to get their hands on the two characters as well as Scott in his werewolf form.

Teen Wolf was a reboot of the film of the same name and it premiered on MTV in 2011. After six seasons, the hit show has decided to bow out and the final 10 episodes will air from June.

The figures are expected to be released this Spring so make sure you keep an eye out and add them to your collection!

MTV’s reboot of Teen Wolf is coming to an end with its sixth and final season. Currently airing in the US, the sixth season offers fans a final 20 episodes to spend with Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and the gang. Since it began in 2011, Teen Wolf has been a consistent performer in the ratings and has built a hardcore fanbase that has followed it over the duration of its run. In the UK the show has bounced around the schedules and channels, never quite finding its right home. That’s understandably left a lot of fans pretty annoyed as the show disappeared for years after the end of the second season.

If you wish to avoid spoilers for seasons three, four and five, we suggest you stop reading now.

In time for Christmas that is being rectified with the release of seasons three, four and five on DVD. That’s an astonishing 56 episodes for fans to catch-up on and it’s pretty much the perfect binge-watching show if you ask me. At the end of Teen Wolf’s second season Jackson Whittemore (Colton Haynes) was killed after turning into the Kanima but returned as a blue-eyed werewolf. Peter Hale (Ian Bohen) warned of the arrival of a new pack of Alpha werewolves and Allison (Crystal Reed) decided to break up with Scott.

As season 3 opens Jackson has moved to London, and doesn’t return to the show in any of these seasons, and the threat of the new Alpha pack hangs over Scott and his friends. The Alphas are determined to get Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) to join their pack and are prepared to kill his young pack in order to force him to do so. As they try to deal with that, there’s also the emergence of a supernatural Druid that is killing people and absorbing their powers to battle the Alphas.

The third season is split into two definitive parts that are strung together by the Alpha storyline. In the back half of the season Scott struggles to find his place in the Alpha pack and the spirit of Nogitsune, who possesses Stiles, threatens them. The character of Kira Yukimura (Arden Cho) makes her debut and she’s quickly established as being able to help battle Nogitsune thanks to the powers she possesses.

Season four jumps forward two months as Scott and his friends deal with the deaths of several of their friends, which happened at the end of season 3. Back in school and with their focus on being human, the group adds new friend Malia (Shelley Hennig). Of course in Beacon Hills things don’t stay calm for too long and Kate Argent’s (Jill Wagner) resurrection throws a curveball as does the arrival of a new enemy known simply as The Benefactor.

The season is shorter than the third with only 12 episodes but plenty is packed in over the course of them. Along with the now customary good versus evil fight that takes place every season, the fourth season sees Scott dealing with his first Beta werewolf Liam Dunbar (Dylan Sprayberry). By the season’s end there’s the departure of another major original character, which I’ll admit does leave a bit of a hole in season 5.

Teen Wolf’s fifth season introduces a whole heap of new characters including werewolves Theo Raeken (Cody Christian) and Brett Talbot (Cody Saintgnue). Scott, Stiles, Lydia (Holland Roden) and Malia are all on the eve of their senior year and the season is very much focused on moving on, growing up and finding your own path in life. Of course with this being Teen Wolf it’s anything but plain sailing as the group faces an enemy the likes of which they’ve never battled before.

The Dread Doctors are the big bad for season five, a team of scientists that create supernatural beings. The season allows introduces the character of Sebastien Valet (Gilles Marini), the original Beast of Gevaudan, who is the biggest threat posed to Scott and the group after being resurrected by the Dread Doctors. There’s also the return of a familiar face in a different role that I thought was pretty cleverly done.

    Teen Wolf Season 5

The thing that’s always been the strength of Teen Wolf is its young ensemble cast. Tyler Posey and Dylan O’Brien are one of the best double acts on TV and their chemistry is as evident off-screen as it is on-screen. Both actors really shine throughout these three seasons and to be honest I’ll be sad not to see them regularly once the show ends its final season in 2017. Their supporting cast is superb too with strong turns from Tyler Hoechlin proving to be much more than simply guy candy (he’s shirtless more than he’s anything else) and Shelley Hennig adding to the cast as Malia.

Unusually for a show aimed at teens, Teen Wolf is actually fairly complex and requires you to actually pay attention. The writers have created a rich cast of characters with depth and the way everything interlinks is very impressive. I had a hard time keeping up with who’s who at points so make sure you actually concentrate on the show and put your phone on silent so you’re not tempted to multi-task.

The extras across the three boxsets include handful of featurettes, gag reels, deleted scenes and the very welcome Return of the Shirtless Montage that celebrates the large amount of male torsos you get to enjoy over the course of the show.

Teen Wolf is a show that really defied expectations and did something very different with its source material. The show is a good mix of drama and humour with plenty of suspenseful moments too. The show really comes into its own during these three seasons and the fact it survives the loss of three major characters, shows just how well written it is and how hardcore a fanbase it has. If you’ve got some spare time on our hands this Christmas then I‘d recommend getting your hands on these boxsets and binging your way through the festive season.

Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and his friends were left with more than a few loose ends at the end of Teen Wolf season one. Firstly Lydia (Holland Roden) was recovering from being bitten by now deceased Alpha Peter Hale (Ian Bohen). Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) assumed the role of Alpha after killing Peter and left us with a cliffhanger as to whether he actually bit school jock Jackson (Colton Haynes) or not. Scott and Allison (Crystal Reed) decided to continue seeing each other without their parents knowledge especially after Allison’s dad Chris (JR Bourne) discovered that Scott was a werewolf.

In season two we learn whether or not Jackson was bitten, which we won’t spoil for you, and the gang has to track down and unmask a new beast that is murdering people in the town. Lydia is haunted by hallucinations following her bite in the first season and Allison’s grandfather Gerard (Michael Hogan) comes to town declaring war on werewolves following the death of his daughter Kate (Jill Wagner). Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) of course finds himself caught up in the action supporting Scott and trying to stop his policeman father from finding out what they’re up to.

Teen Wolf has really established itself as a force in its own right after stepping out of the shadows of the classic movie that it’s based on. The series really does bear very little resemblance to the Michael J Fox film and is a mix of comedy, action and drama. The whole tone is very dark and surprisingly adult in places for a show that is shown on MTV. If you’ve seen the first season then you’ll know what to expect from season two. Over the 12 episodes the storylines come fast and furious whilst the twists, turns and surprises keep you hooked.

What the second season does so well is really build on the characters that we got to know and love during the first season. We see more layers to each of the characters with all the main characters really evolving and progressing over the course of the season. Jackson finally becomes more than the angry popular school jock, Allison learns to man-up when she needs to and Scott realises just how much pressure is on his shoulders now he’s adjusted to being a wolf.

Extras across the 3-disc boxset include a gag reel, lots of featurettes such as Teen Wolf Season 2 at Paleyfest 2012, selected episode commentaries and a Shirtless Montage.

Teen Wolf: The Complete Second Season is a pure adrenaline thrill-ride from start to finish. The show doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t and it’s good old-fashion fun. It reminds us of the glory days of Buffy and Angel, and its cast do a fantastic job. The end of the season has left us eager for season three to debut here in the UK. We’re sad to know that one cast member won’t be returning.
