Chris Stapleton is a highly acclaimed American singer-songwriter known for his soulful voice, captivating lyrics, and remarkable guitar skills. While he has gained massive popularity as a solo artist, he has also made significant contributions to the music industry by writing songs for other artists. In celebration of him releasing new song ‘White Horse’ last week and revealing the track list and release date for new album ‘Higher’ we delve into the list of what we think are the best songs he has written for other artists.

‘Never Wanted Nothing More’ – Kenny Chesney

‘Never Wanted Nothing More’ became a chart-topping hit for Kenny Chesney. The song’s heartfelt lyrics and catchy melody resonated with audiences, and Stapleton’s writing prowess received widespread recognition.

‘Your Man’ – Josh Turner

Stapleton co-wrote ‘Your Man’ with Jace Everett and Chris DuBois. The song was released in 2005 and became Josh Turner’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

‘Drink a Beer’ – Luke Bryan

In collaboration with Jim Beavers, ‘Drink a Beer’ was penned by Stapleton. Luke Bryan recorded the song, which was included in his album ‘Crash My Party’ (2013). The emotional ballad touched the hearts of listeners and earned critical acclaim. You can watch Stapleton sing the song with Luke Bryan in the video below.

‘Love’s Gonna Make It Alright’ – George Strait

Chris Stapleton, along with Al Anderson, wrote ‘Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,’ which George Strait recorded in 2011. The song showcases Stapleton’s ability to craft heartfelt and timeless country.

‘Come Back Song’ – Darius Rucker

Stapleton contributed to the writing of ‘Come Back Song,’ released by Darius Rucker in 2010. The song was well-received, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

‘If It Hadn’t Been for Love’ – Adele

Originally recorded by Stapleton’s Bluegrass band The Steel Drivers, ‘If It Hadn’t Been for Love’ caught the attention of British superstar Adele. She included a version of the song on her album ’21’ (2011), introducing Stapleton’s songwriting to a broader international audience.

‘Crash and Burn’ – Thomas Rhett

Co-written with Jesse Frasure, ‘Crash and Burn’ became a hit for Thomas Rhett in 2015, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

‘Ready to Roll’ – Blake Shelton

In total, Blake Shelton has cut six Chris Stapleton-penned songs, including ‘Ready to Roll,’ which was one of three songs Stapleton co-wrote on Shelton’s 2011 record ‘Red River Blue’. That record also contains ‘Sunny in Seattle’ and ‘I’m Sorry’ also written by Stapleton.

Chris Stapleton’s songwriting contributions for other artists have played a vital role in shaping the country and popular music landscape. Through his poetic and emotive lyrics, he has crafted songs that resonate deeply with audiences and have become chart-topping hits for renowned musicians. Stapleton’s talent as a songwriter has not only enriched the careers of other artists but has also solidified his position as one of the most respected and influential figures in contemporary country music. As his career continues to flourish, it is clear that Chris Stapleton’s impact on the music industry will be felt for years to come.

Today, GRAMMY®, CMA and ACM-Award winning Country star Carly Pearce officially ushers in the next era of her musical journey with the announcement of her brand new single, ‘We Don’t Fight Anymore’ (featuring Chris Stapleton), available everywhere on June 16 and officially impacting US Country radio on June 20 via Big Machine Records.

Pre-save “We Don’t Fight Anymore” (featuring Chris Stapleton) HERE.

Written by Pearce alongside frequent collaborator Shane McAnally and Pete Good, ‘We Don’t Fight Anymore’ was produced by McAnally, Josh Osborne, and Pearce. Marking the first new music since her critically-acclaimed third studio album ’29: Written in Stone’, the single is an authentic display of Pearce’s musical sensibilities as she leans into her sound and cements her place as a transcendent storyteller.

“I’ve always wanted to write music that makes people feel something – whether that is feeling seen, less alone, happy or even uncomfortable. ‘We Don’t Fight Anymore’ felt like I was writing one of those stories that, whether or not we want to include it in our social media highlight reel, we’ve either been there or are living there right now,” Pearce says of the song’s origins. “Having Chris Stapleton join me on this song was a dream come true and he unlocked an element to the story that I didn’t even know it needed.”

In both celebration of capping her 29 chapter with her fourth career No. 1 song – the PLATINUM-certified “What He Didn’t Do” – and a nod to soon stepping into her next era, Pearce had fans and social media abuzz with a teaser post on Instagram last Wednesday that featured the blurred out “We Don’t Fight Anymore” single artwork. She continued the digital Easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans with additional posts throughout the weekend that steadily became more clear each day to unveil a new aspect of the song, culminating with her full reveal this morning.

The release of Megan Moroney’s excellent debut album, ‘Lucky’, last Friday (May 5th) got us to thinking about what are the best debut albums in the Country music genre. You can read our review of ‘Lucky’ right here if you missed it.

A groundbreaking or unique debut album in Country music is not something that happens all that often. It sometimes takes artists two, three or even four albums to really hit their stride but in an industry that is becoming more cut-throat and ‘short term’-ist, some artists don’t get the chance to make those follow up albums. So, here is out list of Country music artist that hit the ground running with some of the best debuts of all time.

Kacey Musgraves – ‘Same Trailer, Different Park’ 2013

Most newer female artists in 2023 can trace their Country music legacies and origins back to one of three artists. Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift or Kacey Musgraves. Musgraves’ groundbreaking debut album mixed classic Country with Western vibes and biting, sardonic lyrics. Her ‘It Is What It Is’, no-holds-barred attitude was the shot in the arm the genre needed to counter the oncoming assault of Bro-Country and spawned a thousand wannabes.

Johnny Cash – ‘With His Hot and Blue Guitar’ 1957

Cash’s first big hit, ‘Cry, Cry, Cry’ is on this album but more importantly, so are ‘I Walk the Line’ and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, two of Cash’s most iconic songs ever. The album was re-issued in 2002 some more tracks but it was this tight, 27 minute, 12 track debut release that set the stage for everything that Cash would go on to achieve in his career.

Steve Earle – ‘Guitar Town’ 1986

Topping the Billboard Country album charts, this classic went on to provide Earle with two Grammy nominations in 1987 and was eventually included in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2012. It was considered the rockers version of Country music and at ten tracks was a tight, concise project that laid the foundations for Earle to go on to produce the hugely successful ‘Copperhead Road’ just two years later.

Ashley McBryde – ‘Girl Going Nowhere’ 2018

Having built up a pre-release buzz over in London at the C2C festival McBryde released her iconic debut album in late March of 2018. Producer Jay Joyce captured the subtle blend of Rock & Country that defines this album superbly. Tracks like ‘Radioland’ echo an American upbringing not found anywhere else in the world, whilst the title track is a big middle finger to all those people, particularly one teacher, who doubted that Ashley McBryde could achieve musical success. McBryde is also not afraid to explore rawer subjects like drug addiction on tracks like ‘Livin Next to Leroy’.

Clint Black – ‘Killin’ Time’ 1989

Even bigger than Garth Brooks for a while back there in the late 80s, Black’s debut album was lightning in a bottle and something, unfortunately, that he could never quite capture again. Four huge hit singles like ‘A Better Man and ‘Nobody’s Home’ helped bring huge commercial success and the LA Times wrote ‘Black has a winning vocal style that evokes a very young Merle Haggard.’ His flame burned hard and fast but although he has charted over 30 singles on the Billboard charts, Black was never quite able to find the magic again on any of his subsequent albums.

    Sam Hunt – ‘Montevallo’ 2014

Perhaps the most controversial inclusion on the list but this album is both an absolute beast and absolute game changer. For years after many artists, including established ‘hat wearers’ like Dustin Lynch even tried to ape Hunt’s infamous ‘sing-speech’ delivery, that was the influence that this album had on the genre. Throw in the fact that there isn’t a bad song on this album and it spawned 5 hit singles between June 2014 and March 2016 and you’ve got a worthy addition that went on to impact the sound & style of Nashville for years to come too.

Garth Brooks – ‘Garth Brooks’ 1989

Unlike Clint Black, who also released his debut album in 1989, Brooks was able to find gold on his debut album in the form of tracks like, ‘Much Too Young to Feel This Damn Old’ and ‘The Dance’ but also build upon that success across the rest of his resulting albums up to 1997’s ‘Seven’ album. Despite being criticised in some circles for ‘not being Country’ Brooks as gone on to cement his status as the GOAT of Country music and it all started in 1989.

    Dolly Parton – ‘Hello, I’m Dolly’ 1967

Similar to Garth Brooks, Parton arrived in a blaze of glory and managed to keep the flame burning for decades after. Her 1968 debut featured 12 tracks, 10 of which were written by Parton herself. The album spawned two hits, ‘Dumb Blonde’ (you can see what she was doing with the marketing right from the off there) and ‘Something Fishy’ which peaked at 24 and 17 respectively so it wasn’t a massive commercial success but the seeds of her success were sown and the critical reception from the magazines of the time garnered high praise all round.

The Chicks – ‘Wide Open Spaces’ 1998

The Dixie Chicks, as they were back in 1998, revolutionised Country music in the late 90s with the release of this album. There isn’t a single artist in Nashville now who doesn’t love their music or didn’t grow up singing songs like ‘There’s Your Trouble’ or ‘Tonight, the Heartache’s One Me’. They were able to build on the success of this album with subsequent classics like ‘Fly’ and ‘Home’ before the infamous ‘Shut up and sing’ moment from a stage in London that changed the course of their careers forever.

    Chris Stapleton – ‘Traveller’ 2015

This article is not really a ‘ranking’ article but if it was there would be a strong argument for Stapelton’s ‘Traveller’ to be ranked as the greatest Country debut album of all time. It not only revolutionised his career but it caused a paradigm shift in the genre itself, right at the height of the Bro-Country phenomenon that led to artists like Luke Combs being signed, which in itself is influencing the decisions being made on Music Row right now. The awards this album has won are too numerous to name, which is fascinating because it wasn’t a big singles album, but it just burned and burned through word of mouth and Stapleton’s fiery live performances. ‘Traveller’ seemed to hang around in the charts for about 3 or 4 years after too. An absolute unicorn of an album.

There were some surprises and some predictable moments at the CMA awards in Nashville last night. Lainey Wilson was the big winner, walking away with both New Artists and Female Vocalist of the Year. The latter is a huge win for Lainey when you look at the quality of vocalists that she beat.

Entertainer of the Year was (sorry, Carrie Underwood fans) always going to be between Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen and having seen Combs at both the C2C festival and the CMAFest last year I’ve got to say it’s a well deserved win for the big guy. Album of the Year, however? Hmmmmm. Not so sure about that one. We found Combs’ this album to be a little predictable and a tad generic in terms it sounding exactly like every other Luke Combs release to date. Also predictable was Chris Stapleton as Male Vocalist. Another year, another award for Country’s silent assassin!

Last night (Sunday April 3rd) was the annual (delayed) Grammy award in Las Vegas.

A week after one of the most chaotic Oscars in recent memory the Grammys seemed to revel in its technical proficiency and lack of controversy. “We’re gonna be listening to some music, we’re gonna be dancing, we’re gonna be singing, we’re gonna be keeping people’s names out of our mouths,” said host Trevor Noah in his opening monologue, acknowledging the elephant in the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Country music is always a feature of every Grammy ceremony and this year was no different, with one big winner, the incomparable Chis Stapleton. Stapleton took home 3 out of the 4 awards he was nominated for. We were thrilled to see Brothers Osborne take home a Grammy for their awesome song, ‘Younger Me’.

Performance wise, Brandi Carlile drew a standing ovation for Right on Time, a song that was nominated for ‘Record of the Year’ but eventually lost out to Silk Sonic. Here are the Country music award winners:

    10. Hot Country Knights – ‘The K Is Silent’

Hot Country Knights may be a parody band featuring Dierks Bentley but they certainly delivered the album we all needed at the start of the first lockdown. With a nod to 90s music, some fantastic visuals and Dierks in character as Doug Douglason, Hot Country Knights were the light relief that came at the right time. From the Travis Tritt featuring ‘Pick Her Up’ to the bottom-loving ‘Asphalt’, this album kept a smile on our faces all year.

Chris Stapleton is without a doubt one of the most talented artists in music right now. With a prolific catalogue of hits for other artists and plenty of his own hits, Stapleton has had a meteoric rise over the last five years since the release of his debut album ‘Traveller’. That album was certified 4x Platinum and in 2017 Stapleton followed it up with the two-part album ‘From A Room’. We last saw him on UK shows in 2019 when he headlined C2C: Country to Country and now Stapleton is releasing his eagerly-awaited fourth album (or third if you count ‘From a Room’ as one release) ‘Starting Over’.

An artist who needs no frills, Stapleton always succeeds on the strength of his vocals and his songwriting. As with all his albums, there are a few covers thrown into the mix on ‘Starting Over’ – John Fogerty’s ‘Joy of My Life’ and Guy Clark’s ‘Worry B Gone’ and ‘Old Friends’ – but the other 11 tracks are new tracks written by Stapleton with various collaborators. The album opens with the acoustic lead single, and title track, ‘Starting Over’ and it’s a nice connector to his previous albums. Stapleton’s voice is one that captivates you immediately and with a sparse backing and his wife Morgane on harmony vocals, he really shines as he sings about making it through life with someone who loves and supports you.

The rock influences kick in on the riff-driven ‘Devil Always Made Me Think Twice’, a song I’m already dying to hear in a live arena (remember gigs, anyone?!?). The deep groove and foot-stomping beat reels you in and doesn’t let you go until the song is over. ‘Cold’ is the album’s first (of many) standout moments. It’s classic Stapleton putting his gut-wrenching vocal right in the centre of everything. There’s something about his voice that just transports you to a different place and it moves every single part of your soul. Few artists are able to do that but Stapleton makes it look easy.

Highlights on the album include the hard rocking ‘Arkansas’, which features gritty vocals and crunchy electric guitars, the 70s almost-Fleetwood Mac-esque ‘Hillbilly Blood’ and the hard-hitting truth-telling of ‘Watch You Burn’, which takes aim at the people responsible for the various atrocities that have taken place in America over the past few years. My absolute favourite moment on the record comes on ‘Maggie’s Song’, an ode to Stapleton’s late dog. It’s surprisingly emotional, heartwarming and just… well, lovely. As a dog lover, it hit me in all the right places.

In the album’s final stretch Stapleton injects a bit of loose Blues into ‘You Should Probably Leave’, a surprisingly funky moment, and he closes the album with the beautiful ‘Nashville, TN’, a song that sees him breaking up with Music City.

Quite frankly ‘Starting Over’ is flawless. There’s nothing here to pick fault with; there’s no filler and every song deserves its place here. Stapleton is a once-in-a-lifetime talent and while some of his critics may moan about his stage presence, I’d happily sit anywhere and listen to him perform. A master of his craft, Stapleton is the best there is in Country music and to be honest, any genre of music. ‘Starting Over’ is his finest album yet and it’ll increase his ever-growing fan base even further.

Happy New Year to all of our readers and welcome to the first edition of the EF Country Podcast of 2020.

To kick off the year, Pip and Laura talk about gateway artists in Country music. For those that aren’t familiar with the term, ‘gateway artists’ are those artists that appeal outside of their chosen genre and introduce people to music they’ve never listened to before.

Think along the lines of Shania Twain and Dixie Chicks back in the 90s or Dan + Shay and Chris Stapleton from the modern crop of acts.
