As a massive fan of ‘The Expendables’ franchise I was eagerly awaiting this fourth chapter in the action extravaganza. The films might not be instant classics but they were certainly entertaining, and seeing an ensemble of action legends all come together onscreen was always a fun ride to take – a novelty that I enjoyed immensely. So it comes as an absolute sucker punch to see that ‘The Expendables 4’ (or ‘Expend4bles’ as no-one is calling it), is a complete waste of a concept, a good ensemble, and a franchise that still had a lot to offer audiences. A woeful script, peppered with atrocious dialogue, completely wastes open goals of opportunity and delivers a TV-movie level actioner that’s disappointing on practically every level.

The plot involves Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) banding together the latest iteration of his Expendables Special Forces team, under the guide of government agent Marsh (Andy Garcia), to stop some stolen nuclear devices from being activated. His right-hand man Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) joins up with old regulars Gunner (Dolph Lundgren) and Toll Road (Randy Couture). Along for the ride are new recruits Easy Day (50 Cent), Galan (Jacob Scipio) and Lash (Levy Tran), with Lee’s on again-off again girlfriend Gina (Megan Fox) also in tow.

No-one goes into these films expecting Oscar-worthy scripts, but the dialogue this time around is especially wooden and has no natural flow to it whatsoever. We know these people can act because we’ve seen it before, but ‘The Expendables 4’ seems to have been mapped out with no consideration for what’s come before, a complete lack of character development and a basic misunderstanding of what a classic 80s action film was all about.

The cast do what they can with the poor material laid out in front of them. Sylvester Stallone is in it more than I expected, but it’s still woefully underusing him and his talents. Jason Statham must be exhausted because he’s carrying this entire film on his back, but even he can’t work miracles in these trying circumstances. Megan Fox is a decent actress when she has the right material (‘Jennifer’s Body’ is an absolute classic and she is brilliant in that), and I’ve been a fan of her work in the past. She is obviously a siren, and dutifully portrays this in the film. But her character is so thinly put-together it’s absurd. She will no doubt get stick for this film, but a better writing team can easily make her character useful, and not just the seemingly obligatory eye-candy.

Dolph Lundgren’s character has historically been wasted in this franchise as an inside-joke that no one asked for. His comic relief is awful, and that’s no fault of his own. It’s completely down to the awful writing he has had to endure. Lundgren is a good actor – give him better material for the love of God. An absolute waste of a talent. Andy Garcia chews up the scenery, 50 Cent offers nothing of real substance and Levy Tran is completely wasted as Lash. However there are some positives. Randy Couture is still solid and Tony Jaa steals the film as Decha, a former ally of Barney who helps Lee out mid-film. Iko Uwais is always a joy to watch onscreen, and Jacob Scipio does a fantastic job playing Galan (who is meant to be Antonio Banderas’ character’s son). Banderas was meant to reprise his role of Galgo in this movie, but scheduling conflicts prevented it. So, (in the only good move the writers made with this entire film), they repurposed the character to be his son. Scipio does a remarkable job channelling Banderas trademark charisma.

How it took four writers to come up with this story is beyond me, but we have Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, Max Adams and Spenser Cohen to thank for this mess. Not forgetting Scott Waugh’s poor direction which frequently opts for close-up action when a wider shot would have been far more satisfying to see the impressive set-pieces play out in. The fight between Jason Statham and Iko Uwais was great, as was any scene featuring Tony Jaa, but its impact was always affected by the way the sequences were put together, from its cinematography right down to its editing. Thankfully this isn’t ‘Taken 2’ levels of bad epilepsy-inducing action, but it also doesn’t hit its (very easy attainable) marks. Do the basics right and you win half the battle.

‘The Expendables 4’ is a massive missed opportunity and a complete waste of a chapter. Especially when we’ve had 3 very enjoyable movies already. And with the cast aging out soon, it seems like this is even more wasted time to deliver action fans a good, all-star ensemble. It was a long gap of almost 10 years between ‘The Expendables 3’ and this ‘Expend4bles’ mess, so we are running out of time. So please hire better writers and a proper action director if we are to get one more round with these characters. There is a market for this if anyone is willing to actually invest the proper time and attention this franchise needs. The fans deserve a much better finale than this.

Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Megan Fox, Randy Couture, 50 Cent, Dolph Lundgren, Andy Garcia, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Levy Tran, Jacob Scipio Director: Scott Waugh Writer: Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, Max Adams, Spenser Cohen Certificate: 15 Duration: 103 mins Released by: Lionsgate Release date: 22nd September 2023

Billy Herrera (Andy Garcia) is taken by surprise when his wife Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) announces that she wants a divorce during a marriage counselling session. Ingrid insists that they tell the family during an evening gathering but when their eldest daughter Sofia (Adria Arjona) reveals that she’s engaged, they decide to share their news at another time. Insistent on getting married quickly, Sofia brings her fiancé Adan (Diego Boneto) to meet the family and the couple clashes with Billy, who wants to shape the wedding with his own traditions. Things are further complicated when Adan’s family visits from Mexico, and they too have their own ideas about the upcoming wedding.

‘Father of the Bride’ is based on the 1949 novel of the same name, which has been twice made into a film previous; in 1950 with Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett and Elizabeth Taylor, and in 1991 with Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short. When the project was first announced, there was a collective response of ‘do we need another remake of this story?’ and I’ll admit I was sceptical, but now having seen the film, I can confirm the answer is ‘yes actually, we do’. This iteration of ‘Father of the Bride’ may take inspiration from the novel and the same title, but it bears little resemblance other than the fact the central family has a daughter who is getting married – and that’s a good thing.

Writer Matt Lopez has updated ‘Father of the Bride’ and relocated the action to focus on a Cuban-American family who reside in Miami. The twist here is that the parents of the bride are going through a rocky patch and the main driver of the story is that Billy doesn’t want to tell anyone about the divorce whereas Ingrid has reached the end of her tether and just wants to share the news with the family. For me, this is the strongest part of the film thanks to the wonderful performances of Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan. Garcia is going through something of a career resurgence at the moment and his portrayal of Billy is fantastic. He’s suitably bolshy, proud and overbearing, providing a perfect contrast to Estefan’s heartfelt performance as Ingrid, the heart of the family and the emotional centrepiece of the film. The two have wonderful chemistry with Estefan in particular proving to be a big surprise.

The chaos of the wedding unfolds as you may expect. Sofia and Adan clash with the Herreras because they want to put traditions to one side and have a more modern wedding. That doesn’t sit well with Billy who offers to pay for the whole thing, mistakenly thinking that will give him full decision-making power. The arrival of Adan’s father Hernan (Pedro Damián), his step-mother Julieta (Macarena Achaga) and his mother Marcela (Laura Harring) from Mexico causes further clashes, and gives the film a chance to explore the differences that exist between Cuban-American and Mexican families. For too long the Latin community has been lumped together as a catch-all and it’s refreshing to see the differences that exist, perfectly highlighted in a scene where Marcela asks why everyone is speaking in English when their native language is Spanish.

‘Father of the Bride’ is bolstered by a bright and engaging ensemble cast. Adria Arjona and Diego Boneta are believable as the young couple in love and on the verge of marriage, while Isabela Merced makes an impression as the youngest daughter in the Herrera family, who is also battling against her father’s expectations for her life. ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Chloe Fineman brings the laughs as millennial wedding planner Natalie Vance and Pedro Damián proves to be a good foil for Garcia’s Billy.

While ‘Father of the Bride’ may not hit too many unfamiliar beats with its story, it will win you over with its effortless charm and huge heart. This is an interesting spin on a familiar story and it works really well. Thanks to a fantastic cast, an infectious soundtrack and an emotive storyline that will connect with audiences, ‘Father of the Bride’ is a real winner and yet another fine example of how the romantic comedy is making a much-needed comeback in 2022.

A new version of ‘Father of the Bride’ is heading your way and the trailer has just debuted for it.

The new film stars Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta and Chloe Fineman, and it is directed by Gaz Alazraki.

Long-marrieds Billy (Andy Garcia) and Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) are surprised when their eldest daughter Sofia (Adria Arjona) comes home to Miami for a visit. But the surprises just keep coming when she announces a new boyfriend, Adan (Diego Boneta) – who is now her fiancé – and their plans for a quick-turnaround wedding and a new life together in Mexico, where Adan’s family is from.

Sofia’s quickfire revelations keep Billy and Ingrid from making their own disclosure – that they’re calling quits on their marriage – but both agree to delay the news and play the loving couple for the benefit of the family.

Old-fashioned Billy is at first opposed to the wedding, but he is eventually swayed – as long as his opinions as father of the bride carry the most weight in all things matrimonial. A prominent architect and family man, Billy feels his hard-fought success and dedication to his heritage earn him the right to call the shots. After all his achievements, why is he suddenly seen as the bad guy?

The same could also be said for Adan’s equally headstrong father, Hernan (Pedro Damián), who soon arrives with his own traditions and family pride in tow. With both iron-willed fathers vying to take charge of the festivities, it becomes a prideful game of one-upmanship, as cultures clash, generations take sides and competing traditions collide. Family relationships are tested, along with the couple at the center of it all, as the roller coaster ride of wedding planning races toward the altar.

‘Father of the Bride’ is based upon the 1950 classic of the same name, which was remade in 1991 with Steve Martin. This new version gives a modern twist to the rom-com classic.

You can watch the trailer at the top of this article.

Lifelong friends Diane (Diane Keaton), Vivian (Jane Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen) and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) hold a monthly book club and for the latest choice promises to spice their lives up. Vivian talks the group into reading the first of the Fifty Shades of Grey books and despite their initial reluctance, they all find themselves hooked. Reading the books sex-led content also makes the four women look at their own love lives and realise that they need to make some serious changes.

On paper Book Club sounds like it could be a cringefest but surprisingly it’s an engaging, laugh-out-loud film with plenty of heart. In the hands of first-time director Bill Holderman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Erin Simms, Book Club is an exploration of rediscovering love and sex when the world wants to tell you you’re past it. Each of the four central women have their own issues to overcome; Diane is grieving her husband and trying to resist her pushy daughters’ desire for her to move in with them, Vivian is confident but a complete commitment-phobe, Sharon discards any notion of romance after her husband leaves her for a younger woman, and Carol is frustrated by her husband’s seeming lack of interest in her sexually.

The four characters are written strongly and each gets plenty of development. You come to care about each of these women and the actresses have such a fantastic chemistry that you easily buy into their friendship. The film explores each woman’s journey in detail with plenty of scenes featuring the foursome together supporting, teasing and helping one another. Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen are absolutely fantastic and part of the joy of the film is just watching these iconic actresses having a ball. They are all very good comedy actresses but they can carry the dramatic weight of the material too.

They are almost matched by their male co-stars Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Richard Dreyfuss and Craig T. Nelson. As the film isn’t really about the men, they get a little less to do but Andy Garcia makes us forget about his appalling performance in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again as Diane’s love interest Mitchell and Craig T. Nelson gives a very emotional performance as Carol’s husband. The supporting cast is strong too with solid turns from Alicia Silverstone and Katie Aselton as Diane’s daughters.

Book Club

The disc includes over an hour of special features taking you behind the film. Featurette It All Started With a Book gives a good insight into the struggle that writers Bill Holderman and Erin Simms had bringing the film to the big screen while Casting Book Club looks at the star-studded cast. The disc also contains three more featurettes – Location, Location, Location, A New Chapter and Living in the Moment – along with 13 deleted or alternate scenes.

Book Club really is the true definition of a feel-good film. It had me laughing a lot and I felt a whole range of feelings. Dare I say I had a tear in my eye at points too. The film’s subject matter is handled in a sensitive and engaging way, and thanks to the stellar cast and the direction of Holderman it’s a complete triumph. Fans of the four leads will lap the film up but I’d wager that the film can find a much wider audience, and one that will have it on their repeat list for years to come.

Cast: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Richard Dreyfuss, Wallace Shawn, Craig T. Nelson, Alicia Silverstone, Katie Aselton Director: Bill Holderman Writers: Bill Holderman, Erin Simms Certificate: 12 Duration: 104 mins Released by: Paramount Home Media Distribution Release date: 24th September (Digital), 8th October (Blu-ray & DVD)

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again review https://entertainment-focus.com/2018/07/19/mamma-mia-here-we-go-again-review/ Thu, 19 Jul 2018 07:16:09 +0000 https://www.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1196036 It's been 10 years since the first film but has it been worth the wait?

This review contains spoilers about Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. If you don’t want to know anything about the film or its storyline, stop reading now!

The 2008 big screen adaptation of West End hit Mamma Mia! was a huge success bringing in more than $615 million at the global box office. The film centred around Donna (Meryl Streep) and her soon-to-be-married daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) with the gorgeous backdrop of Greek Island Kalokairi as the setting. Interspersed with the songs of ABBA, Mamma Mia saw Sophie trying to find out the identity of her father after inviting the three potential candidates to her wedding without telling her mother. Cheesy the film most definitely was but it was a joyous guilty pleasure that struck a chord with filmgoers across the world.

10 years on and the inevitable sequel has arrived with audiences holding very high expectations. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again takes you back to Kalokairi where Sophie is preparing to open her mother’s newly renovated villa to commemorate her memory with Donna having passed away a year earlier. The sequel takes place over two timelines with Sophie’s story unfolding as viewers get to see Donna’s first summer in Kalokairi where she fell in love with the island and became pregnant. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has a very similar feel to the original film but it struggles to capture its magic.

Credit: Universal Pictures UK

At a lengthy almost 2 hours, the film crams in plenty of ABBA songs but a lot of the audience will probably never have heard of them. While there are some hits in there such as Knowing Me, Knowing You and I Have a Dream, there are plenty of songs that wouldn’t be considered ABBA classics and they don’t hit the mark. Familiarity was part of the original film’s charm and that gets lost in the mix this time round.

The new cast members playing the younger versions of the six central characters are among the best part of the film. Lily James puts in a fantastic and energetic performance as Donna while Jessica Keenan Wynn and Alexa Davies impressively mimic Christine Baranski and Julie Walters as Tanya and Rosie. Cher is also magnificent as Donna’s mother Ruby but she only arrives in the the last 20 minutes or so and most of her performance has already been online for a while now. Her rendition of Fernando is without a doubt the best musical moment in the film.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Credit: Universal Pictures UK

The original cast are under-utilised and feel superfluous to the story. Meryl Streep is in the film for around 5 minutes and Pierce Brosnan caused plenty of unintentional laughter with his sub-par singing. Similarly Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgard and Colin Firth have barely any screentime and the addition of Andy Garcia is one that doesn’t really work thanks to his scenery chewing performance. I also found the green screen work very distracting and for a film with a significant budget, it frequently felt a little cheap and rough around the edges.

As the credits rolled I couldn’t help but wonder what the point of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was. Had the film focussed solely on the life of young Donna, it probably would have been much better but the dual storyline felt clunky and an attempt to keep the original cast. Whereas Mamma Mia! is entertaining and fun, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a disappointment that is sure to make a ton of money at the box office but I wouldn’t be surprised if fans are left underwhelmed. This really is a good example of when a film didn’t need a sequel.

Geostorm clearly won’t be to everyone’s taste but for pure escapist fun it delivers in spades. It has a great cast, some interesting set-pieces and it takes place on Earth AND Space! It’s two for one fun for a disaster flick that borrows from every other, but still manages to deliver a popcorn-munching matinee that has a few choice surprises.

Geostorm is a film that was made in the wrong decade. This is a 90s disaster movie in the same mould as Deep Impact, Dante’s Peak, Volcano, Godzilla and Independence Day (the latter two being written by Geostorm’s director Dean Devlin). It would have been much better received in that era. The shoot was a troubled one, having been subject to costly re-edits, numerous drafts and extra scenes, each inflating the budget even more. The unfortunate timing of the release also married up to some of the most devastating real-life storms to ever hit the world. With ad campaigns understandably pulled to be sensitive to the victims, Geostorm didn’t even get a proper promotional push which has resulted in poor box-office returns.

So sitting on the shelf for awhile, Geostorm now arrives with Gerard Butler leading the line as Jake Lawson, a brilliant mind and the architect of a weather-controlling system named Dutch Boy (?) which saved our planet when natural disasters threatened to wipe out mankind. Now a glitch in the system has turned Dutch Boy into a weapon. Having been booted off the project some time ago by his younger brother Max (Jim Sturgess), Jake reluctantly comes back into the fold and leads a team of scientists to uncover what’s really going on, and in the process save the planet once again.

Check out our interview with Gerard Butler

The film’s premise is functional and gets to the point relatively quickly, leaving you to bathe in the spectacle. A lot of it is CGI as you would expect, but it generates some edge-of-your-seat tension all the same. The real success lies in the brother-dynamic between Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess. Both take their roles seriously and I really enjoyed seeing them onscreen together. Butler and Talitha Eliana Bateman also conjure up some nice chemistry as father and daughter, with Bateman once again delivering a great supporting turn after her stellar performance in Annabelle: Creation.

Geostorm

There’s some shaky dialogue and some cartoonish characters throughout the film, and the antagonist is so obvious that the character might as well have just been wearing a cowbell with pointing arrows. But the ensemble does have their moments. Abbie Cornish is fine as Max’s secret service, secret girlfriend Sarah, Alexandra Maria Lara is always watchable and no one phones in a role quite like Andy Garcia, this time as President Andrew Palma. Ed Harris and Robert Sheehan were wasted though.

Check out our interview with Jim Sturgess

I’m not sure how a project like this got the greenlight with such a massive budget, but Geostorm still isn’t as bad as reports suggest, even if it is out of touch with more modern viewing trends. If you can leave logic at the door, you’ll enjoy the ride a lot more. The Earth sequences are solid but the Space Station section is what I enjoyed most. This certainly delivered for escapist fun and if you are looking for a nice break from the usual high-brow fare, Geostorm dutifully obliges.

Let’s Be Cops DVD review https://entertainment-focus.com/2014/12/19/lets-cops-review/ Fri, 19 Dec 2014 13:00:02 +0000 http://www.entertainment-focus.com/?post_type=film-review&p=57164 New Girl's Jake Johnson & Damon Wayans Jr. star in this riotous comedy.

Ryan (Jake Johnson) and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr.) are two best friends in their thirties who haven’t really succeeded in life. Ryan spends his days unofficially coaching kids football at the local park whilst Justin struggles to establish himself as a games developer. Deciding to dress up as police officers for a party one evening, the guys soon realise that they get a lot of respect, stature and attention from everyone on the street, especially women. Everyone thinks that they are real police officers so the guys pretend to be cops to enjoy the perks. But soon they cross paths with a local mobster who doesn’t waste time in making the hapless duo his number one target.

Let’s Be Cops as a premise could have really gone either way. Having not been impressed with any buddy-cop franchises aside from Bad Boys and 21 Jump Street, it’s high time we got some new faces into the genre. Thankfully, Let’s Be Cops is truly laugh-out-loud funny with a nonsense concept that feels totally believable in a fun way.

The success of the film lies squarely with Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. They effortlessly sell the premise as the two best friends and anyone who has seen their work on New Girl can attest to their natural chemistry and banter. They positively bounce off one another with quick-fire comedy that feels organic. It’s exactly how best friends would act in such ridiculous situations.

The supporting cast are all fine. Keegan-Michael Key is hilarious as a gangster who befriends our hapless duo whilst the always underrated Rob Riggle finally gets a substantial supporting role. England’s own James D’Arcy does a good job as a scary mobster and it’s nice to see screen legend Andy Garcia lend himself to this kind of protect too. Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries doesn’t have much to do other than look hot in short-shorts but she obliges. Natasha Leggero is only in this for a short while but she steals her scenes as a turned-on bystander who allows the cops to use her apartment for a stakeout.

Co-writer and director Luke Greenfield brings a nice style to Let’s Be Cops. He resists the worrying trend of cutting his film like a frantic music video, but instead allows the comedy and circumstance do the talking. When needed, the action is ramped up accordingly and choreographed very well too. The set-pieces are also hilarious – the final gun fight is excellent but the store break-in featuring a giant naked man jumping on Wayans Jr. is tear-inducingly funny.

Let’s Be Cops is a very entertaining caper that frequently conjures up belly laughs. In Johnson and Wayans Jr, we have a fresh new comedy-duo that can go on to make it big like Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Much better than Ice Cube and Kevin Hart’s recent Ride Along, Let’s Be Cops might not reinvent the wheel but it does the basics just right to leave you with a comedy that hits all of its marks.
