As a massive fan of ‘The Expendables’ franchise I was eagerly awaiting this fourth chapter in the action extravaganza. The films might not be instant classics but they were certainly entertaining, and seeing an ensemble of action legends all come together onscreen was always a fun ride to take – a novelty that I enjoyed immensely. So it comes as an absolute sucker punch to see that ‘The Expendables 4’ (or ‘Expend4bles’ as no-one is calling it), is a complete waste of a concept, a good ensemble, and a franchise that still had a lot to offer audiences. A woeful script, peppered with atrocious dialogue, completely wastes open goals of opportunity and delivers a TV-movie level actioner that’s disappointing on practically every level.

The plot involves Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) banding together the latest iteration of his Expendables Special Forces team, under the guide of government agent Marsh (Andy Garcia), to stop some stolen nuclear devices from being activated. His right-hand man Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) joins up with old regulars Gunner (Dolph Lundgren) and Toll Road (Randy Couture). Along for the ride are new recruits Easy Day (50 Cent), Galan (Jacob Scipio) and Lash (Levy Tran), with Lee’s on again-off again girlfriend Gina (Megan Fox) also in tow.

No-one goes into these films expecting Oscar-worthy scripts, but the dialogue this time around is especially wooden and has no natural flow to it whatsoever. We know these people can act because we’ve seen it before, but ‘The Expendables 4’ seems to have been mapped out with no consideration for what’s come before, a complete lack of character development and a basic misunderstanding of what a classic 80s action film was all about.

The cast do what they can with the poor material laid out in front of them. Sylvester Stallone is in it more than I expected, but it’s still woefully underusing him and his talents. Jason Statham must be exhausted because he’s carrying this entire film on his back, but even he can’t work miracles in these trying circumstances. Megan Fox is a decent actress when she has the right material (‘Jennifer’s Body’ is an absolute classic and she is brilliant in that), and I’ve been a fan of her work in the past. She is obviously a siren, and dutifully portrays this in the film. But her character is so thinly put-together it’s absurd. She will no doubt get stick for this film, but a better writing team can easily make her character useful, and not just the seemingly obligatory eye-candy.

Dolph Lundgren’s character has historically been wasted in this franchise as an inside-joke that no one asked for. His comic relief is awful, and that’s no fault of his own. It’s completely down to the awful writing he has had to endure. Lundgren is a good actor – give him better material for the love of God. An absolute waste of a talent. Andy Garcia chews up the scenery, 50 Cent offers nothing of real substance and Levy Tran is completely wasted as Lash. However there are some positives. Randy Couture is still solid and Tony Jaa steals the film as Decha, a former ally of Barney who helps Lee out mid-film. Iko Uwais is always a joy to watch onscreen, and Jacob Scipio does a fantastic job playing Galan (who is meant to be Antonio Banderas’ character’s son). Banderas was meant to reprise his role of Galgo in this movie, but scheduling conflicts prevented it. So, (in the only good move the writers made with this entire film), they repurposed the character to be his son. Scipio does a remarkable job channelling Banderas trademark charisma.

How it took four writers to come up with this story is beyond me, but we have Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, Max Adams and Spenser Cohen to thank for this mess. Not forgetting Scott Waugh’s poor direction which frequently opts for close-up action when a wider shot would have been far more satisfying to see the impressive set-pieces play out in. The fight between Jason Statham and Iko Uwais was great, as was any scene featuring Tony Jaa, but its impact was always affected by the way the sequences were put together, from its cinematography right down to its editing. Thankfully this isn’t ‘Taken 2’ levels of bad epilepsy-inducing action, but it also doesn’t hit its (very easy attainable) marks. Do the basics right and you win half the battle.

‘The Expendables 4’ is a massive missed opportunity and a complete waste of a chapter. Especially when we’ve had 3 very enjoyable movies already. And with the cast aging out soon, it seems like this is even more wasted time to deliver action fans a good, all-star ensemble. It was a long gap of almost 10 years between ‘The Expendables 3’ and this ‘Expend4bles’ mess, so we are running out of time. So please hire better writers and a proper action director if we are to get one more round with these characters. There is a market for this if anyone is willing to actually invest the proper time and attention this franchise needs. The fans deserve a much better finale than this.

Scott Adkins stars in the action epic Triple Threat – and it’s the stuff of martial arts dreams. Triple Threat, which is out now on DVD from Universal, features an ensemble like no other with a fantastic array of talent combining to create a fan’s wish-list of modern martial artists.

Triple Threat is the massive and eagerly-anticipated extravaganza that pairs Adkins up with screen action legends like Tiger Chen, Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa and The Raid’s Iko Uwais.

Scott is one of the hardest working actors this country has ever produced. In this latest project, he once again plays the bad guy in a high-octane action-fest with some incredible stunts and martial arts on show.

In Triple Threat, a hit contract is taken out on a billionaire’s daughter who is intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate. A down and out team of mercenaries must take on a group of professional assassins and stop them before they kill their target.

We got to chat with Scott about Triple Threat, working with this amazing ensemble, his thoughts on the new Batman casting, his favourite film of the year so far and his future projects.

How did you first get involved with the project?

It was pitched to me… we didn’t have a script yet but they wanted to do Tiger Chen, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais in a film together. And then they talked about getting some westerners to be the bad guys. I was always a huge fan of Tiger Chen and Iko Uwais, but I’ve been a huge fan of Tony Jaa from Ong-Bak, which goes way back. So that was the main reason, as I’d always wanted to work with Tony Jaa, and I got to fight with Tony and Iko which was great! And once Jesse Johnson got onboard as director it was easy for me to get on the project.

With a cast this impressive, was there any trepidation in taking on the film? I take it there were no egos on-set, because the chemistry seemed to be perfectly balanced onscreen.

No, there wasn’t any egos on-set, and that’s honestly the truth. We all got on brilliantly and we had a laugh – actually it’s one of the most fun films I’ve ever worked on to be honest. But there is a level of competition. When it’s time to roll we do our very best, as well as making ourselves look good and helping each other look good.

You have to stay in peak physical condition all year round, but did you have to alter your training at all to prepare for Triple Threat?

Not really, we do this all year around so have to be ready should the opportunity come up. ‘Stay ready and you don’t need to get ready’, that’s my motto!

With so much talent assembled, what was your personal ‘wow’ moment from working on Triple Threat?

I really wanted to work with Tony, but when I found out that I’d be fighting Tony and Iko at the same time (and do quite well against them!) that was a wow moment! It just so happened in the script that I had to face them at the same time, and I thought ‘Wow, are they actually going to let me do this, haha!’ It was brilliant.

Why do you think people love the action ensemble, and why do you think it doesn’t happen very often these days?

Well it’s tough to get everyone together, it can be quite pricey. If you take The Expendables for instance; back in the day Stallone should have worked with Schwarzenegger. The same people watch the same films. So when they do eventually make a film together, it has that wow factor… and everyone wants to see it. For our film Triple Threat, there’s certainly never been a martial arts ensemble as good as this. Never before.

You deliver the classic line ‘come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough’ before one of your match-ups. Was this you ad-libbing?

I think the director Jesse (Johnson) suggested it – we’ve used it in another film before too. We are both English and we like those ‘English’ sayings so we thought ‘let’s go football hooligan on it!’. You don’t usually hear that in a martial arts movie!

You have an easy short-hand with Michael Jai White onscreen and your scenes together always feel organic. What’s it like working together and how would you say you complement one another when onscreen together?

Yeah me and Mike go way back to 2005 in Undisputed 2, and we remained very good friends ever since. I recently did my passion project Accident Man, which Jesse directed, and Mike came down and did me a favour by being in that. He’s a great guy, and we get on brilliantly. If I’m in LA and there’s a UFC fight on, I’ll go to his house to watch it. He’s a smart, clever guy and he makes me look better, if I’m honest! It’s easy to work with him – the fights, the acting, directing he’s so experienced and he makes it so easy.

Tell us about working with Fight Choreographer Tim Man?

Yeah, Tim is my go-to fight choreographer. Actually I was instrumental in getting him onboard. He worked on Accident Man, and I said to Jesse we’ve got to try and get Tim Man on Triple Threat. And we were able to do it – he is amazing. He’s the Man, as they say!

There’s a great scene when you literally fly across and jump onto a moving car and attack the windscreen. Was this a complex scene to put together?

Not really, we locked off the camera, and we get the car to come through at a certain speed and we knew what height the car was. And then in a separate shot the camera is still locked off, and I do the jump using that to see how high to go. It’s pretty simple to do really when the camera is locked off, and then we splice the footage together.

Your square-up against Iko Uwais was a real highlight for me. The fight seemed to be at a quicker, more frantic pace too, was this a conscious decision based on your fighting styles?

You can’t help but speed up when Iko gets going! He is so fast. Both he and Tony have different styles. Tony is very acrobatic and agile but is extremely powerful. Then you have Iko who is intricate, and speed is the main thing. And he has very complex and quick moves. But they are just so humble and nice people. They want to support everyone, and they want to make me look my best. And they usually choreograph their own fights, but they were happy to say ‘Tim, what do you want to do?’ They were just really accommodating.

Any plans to work with these guys again in the near future?

Nothing concrete at the moment, but we have stayed friends and we would love to. And I’m sure if the opportunity presented itself we would. I work with Jeff (director) quite a lot, so yeah, I’m sure at some point that would likely happen.

When we last spoke you mentioned that you’d like to work on a western or a ‘King Arthur’ style epic film. Any news on that front?

I just had an idea yesterday actually about a medieval one. These things take a few years, but I’m working on it. I’ve got a lot of ideas to be honest – at the moment that’s at the back of the pack right now, but hopefully one day.

One thing I noticed in the opening credits was that you got the coveted ‘And… Scott Adkins’ credit at the end of the cast-list. Was this the first time you’ve had that credit on a film?

Erm, maybe, yeah! ‘Where are you going to put me in the credits because there’s so many people…!’ so we managed to get the ‘And…’ one. I guess I am the boss of the bad guys so it does make sense, but yeah I managed to twist Jesse’s arm to get that! It was all good!

You made a convincing case to become Batman with an audition reel that went viral. How did that come about, and what do you make of the news that Robert Pattinson will take on the mantle next?

Well, I’m sure he’s going to do a great job and I’ve not seen a lot of what he’s done to be honest, but I do really like Matt Reeves as the director. He’s obviously seen something in Robert and we all just need to shut up and not say anything until we see what they do! Regarding my audition, I read a few things in a few places that said that I put my audition out, and that’s kind of frustrating. I would never have done that! The whole thing shouldn’t have got out, but it did, so what can you do? That audition was for the Batman that Ben Affleck ended up playing.

What movies have you seen this year that have left a mark on you?

Erm… I don’t know… I can’t think of anything that’s really blown me away! I did like A Star is Born. It’s amazing when you see Bradley Cooper starts singing, and playing the guitar, and he directed it… what is going on with this guy! He was great – his voice was different and his physicality was different. And Lady Gaga was a revelation, she really impressed me. I know everyone says the same thing, but yeah, off the top of my head A Star is Born.

Can you tell us about your upcoming plans?

I’ve got Hitman 4 coming out which is a martial arts film with Donnie Yen. Avengement has just come out which is a gritty, British crime-thriller and that’s directed by Jesse Johnson and is getting rave reviews, so check that one out. I’ve got a comedy coming out called ‘The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud’ – a sci-fi action comedy! A bit new to me – broad comedy! So we’ll see how that one turns out, hopefully I haven’t embarrassed myself!

Triple Threat is out now on DVD from Universal Pictures.

]]>
Scott Adkins has been a name you can trust in the word of action movies for quite some time. His latest project is Accident Man, an action-thriller available on Digital Download and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on the 16th April.

Based on the underground British comic Toxic! by Pat Mills (creator of the Judge Dredd comic) and Tony Skinner, Accident Man is a darkly humorous and stylishly violent adaptation with Scott Adkins (Doctor Strange, The Expendables 2) playing the title character, a stone-cold killer who must face off against a rogue’s gallery of ruthless assassins in order to uncover the truth about his ex-girlfriend’s murder.

We got to chat with Scott about the movie, his thoughts on the best action & martial arts films of all time and his future projects including Triple Threat, the massive and eagerly-anticipated extravaganza pairing Adkins up with screen legends Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais.

Accident Man co-stars Ashley Greene (Twilight series), Oscar nominee David Paymer (Best Supporting Actor, Mr. Saturday Night, 1992), and action fan favorites Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace), Ray Stevenson (Thor series) and Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) along with Nick Moran, Perry Benson, Ross O’Hennessy and Amy Johnston.

Mike Fallon (Scott Adkins) is the Accident Man – a stone cold killer and the best at what he does. But when a loved one is dragged into the London underworld and murdered by his own crew, Fallon is forced to rip apart the life he knew in order to avenge the one person who actually meant something to him.

How did you first get involved with Accident Man?

When I was about 14 I got the comic book and I was a big fan of it. I kept hold of it all this time, even though the dog ate some of it and I sellotaped it back together, always hoping that maybe one day I could make the film and play Mike Fallon. But I always thought to myself, well, you’ve got to become a star first, become famous and then you can get the film made. What I now know is there were a couple of big time producers that optioned it and wanted to make it. It didn’t work out, lucky for me.

I actually started writing the script before I optioned the property, just as a little experiment. Eventually out of necessity I optioned the property myself, paid for it with my own money. Within a year, I had the finance for the movie. We had Sony on board, the script was written and director in place. Here we are just as the film is being released. It’s a lifelong ambition really. If you could’ve said to me, “Scott, you can make any film. What’s it going to be?” I would’ve said Accident Man.

This film is a classic throw-back to action films of the past which don’t seem to be as prevalent as they were in, say the 90s. Why do you think we as audiences love to see tales like these told onscreen?

Well I’m a big fan of those movies, that’s what i grew up on and because I’m the type of actor that’s very physical and can do the stunts myself my films tend to have that feeling because I can actually do it, I’m the real deal, no CGI, wires, just good old fashioned Chuck Norris stuff. I can only hope that the audience is like me and wants to see more of this type of thing because I certainly do. I miss it. Too many people running around in silly costumes for my liking.

Humour is played out really well in the film. Did you relish the chance to play that side of things on Accident Man?

I did enjoy it but it was also very necessary. We are dealing with a lead character who is an assassin and as long as the money is right he will kill you so without the humour we would have had a pretty bleak dark movie so we absolutely needed it. It’s very much my sense of humour, its not for everyone but if you are a fan of Monty Python, Bottom and Jackass you will most probably enjoy it.

Mike Fallon is a really interesting character, what traits do you share with him? And would you consider revisiting the character for another adventure.

Mike Fallon is a sarcastic arsehole so maybe I share that in common (laughs). He’s a pretty despicable character to be honest but i love anti-hero’s and I believe that as long as you make that character interesting or charming then no matter how much of a bad guy he may be, as long as you mount the obstacles against him and make his enemies more despicable then the audience will go along for that ride. Everyone loves a bad ass anyway. We absolutely want to do Accident Man 2 so I hope people will support the film by legitimate means so it can turn a profit and let us do another.

What is your favourite scene from Accident Man, and what was the most demanding one to shoot?

The fights are always very demanding, its not easy to do but I love seeing the finished product. I love the opening in the bar, its a great introduction for a lead character, not your everyday night in the pub.

Wearing two hats on Accident Man, what was it like to write and star in the same movie? And can we expect more from you as a writer in the future?

I didn’t have to learn the lines because I kind of already knew them from the writing stage but aside from that it was all the same. Its very gratifying to hear your words being spoken by the other actors too, especially if its Ray Stevenson, who is a powerhouse and sure a great actor, I really enjoyed working with him on this. I’d like to write more but I do find it tedious. Its better for me to team up with a partner and do it. I’m more of an ideas man.

Your career has always demanded a lot from you physically. From your standpoint, did this project, which sits as an action and a comedy, require a different style of preparation from you compared to your other, more traditional action roles?

The action is the action and I’m required to be in great shape all year round for that. I love to train, I love martial arts so thats not a problem to get motivated for that. What we wanted to do with the comedy was not try to be funny like Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell, who you could no way compete with anyway, but just to play it straight and find the comedy in the situation. The humour is very dry and British so the more truthful we made it the funnier it was I think.

Accident Man

What film genres would you like to tackle next (that you haven’t tried yet)?

I would absolutely love to be in something like a King Arthur film and play a Knight. That time period has always fascinated me. Would love to do a western also.

We are super-excited about Triple Threat and can’t wait for that to land. What can you tell us about that film and also working alongside great talents like Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais.

Michael I’ve known for over a decade. he’s a fantastic guy and an incredible martial artist. He’s a good friend who helped me out on Accident Man, we were very lucky to have him. I’d wanted to work with Jaa since I saw Ong Bak and it was an absolute pleasure to square off against him and test my metal against him. He’s a humble and very sweet human being. Iko is a really good laugh. He’s constantly making dirty jokes and he’s very funny to have around. The film is a martial arts movie dream for fans and I think they will love it!

What are your top three martial arts films and top three action films of all time?

Top martial arts films – Enter The Dragon, The Raid, Fist of Legend. Top action – Predator, First Blood, The Matrix. That is so difficult to just name 3.

Many believe that we are in a golden age of TV right now and that it has overtaken Film. What do you think about where TV and Film are as mediums today?

TV is so good now because its much riskier than it used to be. It’s much more adult and refined plus you hang out with the characters for a lot longer so the stakes feel higher. But I think there’s still many great films around. The mid-tier projects have been swallowed up by TV. Personally I still prefer film, I like to invest for 2hrs and then get out and come back in to see something else.

Can you tell us about your future projects?

I have another film with Accident Man director Jesse Johnson coming out in the summer called The Debt Collector. It’s more of a character-based action film with a very good story. It’s about a classical martial artist who is down on his luck. He has a gym he’s about to lose, it’s about to be taken over. He needs money fast. One of the guys he trains is a debt collector and he keeps begging him, “Give me some of this work. I need something to stop the gym from going under.” The guy’s like, “Listen, you’re a good fighter but you’re a nice guy. It’s not for you.” He’s like, “No, please, give me a chance.” Really it’s about his first weekend as a debt collector and his descent into the underworld and how the whole thing just goes to sh*t. It’s with Louis Mandylor who I had a great time working with. Of course, Triple Threat with all the best martial artists in one movie together, people are going to enjoy that.

The Raid 2 Blu-ray review https://entertainment-focus.com/2014/08/11/the-raid-2-review/ Mon, 11 Aug 2014 12:27:03 +0000 http://www.entertainment-focus.com/?post_type=film-review&p=45405 Gareth Evans delivers a stunning action masterpiece that redefines the genre.

The post The Raid 2 Blu-ray review appeared first on Entertainment Focus.

]]>
Police officer Rama (Iko Uwais – Merantau) has just barely survived the raid on Tama’s tower block when he is enlisted to go deep undercover in a sting operation. By posing as an inmate in prison, Rama has to befriend the son of a crime syndicate boss (Arifin Putra – Batas) in order to infiltrate their organisation. But as the risk factor soon builds, Rama realises that he may have gone in too deep. The only way out will be to fight his way to the top and bring down the organisation himself.

The Raid was the surprise hit of 2012 and quickly became the biggest cult success of that year. Any sequel was always going to face an uphill task, with the escalating pressure to deliver another hit strongly expected by all. Thankfully The Raid 2 is a breathtaking assault on your senses that leaves you giddy and gob-smacked, with some of the finest martial arts you’ll ever witness on the big screen. Welsh writer/director Gareth Evans has crafted a true classic with The Raid 2 and has managed that rarest of things – a sequel that betters its predecessor. Whereas The Raid was a deceptively simple premise executed with ruthless precision, The Raid 2 is a sweeping crime epic, layered with creativity and a stunning vision of grandeur that amazes at every opportunity.

the raid 2

Iko Uwais is without doubt the next big thing in action cinema. Whilst many have laid claim to that title, Uwais has something different to offer. The likes of Tony Jaa (of Ong Bak fame) have rightly captured the imagination of an eager worldwide audience, using amazing martial arts skills to redefine the genre. But Iko Uwais offers more natural charisma and feels like a movie star as well as a born fighter. The Raid 2 gives Uwais a wonderful chance to broaden his acting skills and he jumps at the opportunity. He handles the complexities of Rama’s situation with pose and wisdom, delivering a truly breakout lead performance. Coupled with his furious combat skills (he even pounds away at a stone wall with his fists), Uwais is a name you’ll hear a lot more of in the future.

The fights are all beautifully choreographed and feature some breathtaking physicality. Yayan Ruhian who played The Raid’s fiercest bad guy Mad Dog, returns in The Raid 2 but as a different character. He co-choreographs most of the fights along with Iko Uwais. A specialist in both Silat Harimau and Silat Minang disciplines, Ruhian and Uwais provide numerous jaw-dropping moments throughout the film, including a nightclub sequence that pits Ruhian against a gang of mob hitters and an amazing prison riot scene that fully immerses the viewer. With the help of Bruce Law and Yee Man Law, there’s even a death-defying high speed car chase that puts all the other car chases you’ve ever seen to shame.

the raid 2

Whilst all of this is spectacular, the final fight sequences are just astonishing. Building up to a palpable sense of tension and raw aggression, these fights are simply genre-defining. Without going into too much detail, Very Tri Yulisman as Baseball Bat Man, Cecep Arif Rahman as The Assassin and the gorgeous Julie Estelle as Hammer Girl join Iko Uwais in creating set-pieces that will ultimately stand the test of time. If you thought The Raid had good action, wait until you see this. A beautiful ballet of brutality, these final fights leave you physically exhausted with your jaw firmly rooted to the ground.

But The Raid 2 isn’t just a bunch of action sequences tied together; it’s an encompassing crime epic. The film doesn’t weigh itself down with needless exposition but is broad enough to take this underworld story to the next level, mainly by expanding its scope. Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, Tio Pakusodewo and Alex Abbad give this story a complexity that’s fascinating to see unravel. Similar to The Departed with tinges of The Dark Knight, Gareth Evans has taken a familiar concept and spun it into gold with a compelling saga that stands on its own merits. Add in the ultra violence and you have a genre movie that has it all. But above all else, The Raid 2 carries a real sense that anything could happen to any character at any time. And that’s an increasingly rare commodity these days.

the raid 2

The Raid 2 is brutal and explosive cinema at its absolute finest. Balletic in conception and flawlessly executed with raw energy and passion by Gareth Evans, The Raid 2 is a crime classic that will stand the test of time. This is not just the best film of 2014; it’s one of the best action films of all time. Other movies just shouldn’t bother to compete with this; The Raid 2 just won’t be beaten. Destined to be emulated for years to come, The Raid 2 is something quite special and will leave you awe-struck from start to end. Make no mistake; you’re witnessing a historic moment in cinema here.

Breaking out of the tower block and into Jakarta’s criminal underworld, and featuring some of the most breath-taking and bone-crunching fight scenes ever committed to film, The Raid 2, released in the UK & Ireland on 11 April, is set to be the must-see action film of 2014.

He thought it was over. After fighting his way through a seemingly impenetrable building filled with gangsters and madmen, rookie Jakarta cop Rama (Iko Uwais) thought his mission was done and he could live a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

His brutal and bloody victory has attracted the attention of the top level underworld kingpins. With his family now in danger, Rama has only one choice to protect them: he must go undercover, infiltrate the criminal organisation that runs the city and work his way to the top until he reaches the corrupt politicians, police and gang bosses who secretly pull the strings.

So Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, taking on the new identity of a vicious thug and entering prison in order to win the trust of the incarcerated son of a prominent crime lord to join the gang himself and take them down once and for all.

The Raid 2 is directed by Gareth Evans who follows up his original smash hit The Raid, expanding the mythology of Rama’s world, increasing the level and complexity of fight choreography and introducing us to a glorious new gallery of villains, from crime lords Bangun and Goto, and mysterious assassin Prakoso, to the iconic Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Man.
