The Littlest Reindeer DVD review https://entertainment-focus.com/2018/10/28/the-littlest-reindeer-dvd-review/ Sun, 28 Oct 2018 17:19:20 +0000 https://www.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1205120 A little horse competes to join Santa's reindeers in this fun family movie.

With Christmas drawing nearer, Santa (George Buza) finds himself in a tough spot when Blitzen unexpectedly retires. Leaving his reindeer team one reindeer short, Santa has to hold try-outs in the North Pole to find a replacement. Little horse Elliot (Josh Hutcherson) believes that he is the right choice for the job and with the help of his friend Hazel (Samantha Bee), a perky goat, he sets about to prove his worth unaware that something sinister is going on back at his ranch.

The Littlest Reindeer isn’t likely to give the likes of Disney Pixar or Dreamworks a run for their money but it’s a sweet enough family film that will resonate with the young audience it’s aimed at. What it lacks in sophistication, it more than makes up for in the cuteness stakes and while the story is hardly original, it’ll be engaging enough to keep the little ones quite over the festive period. Essentially The Littlest Reindeer is a film about overcoming the odds, which is a lesson that feels as important today as it ever has.

Josh Hutcherson is endearing as Elliot but it’s Samantha Bee who steals the show as his friend Hazel. She gets the best lines, injects the film with some much-needed energy and will make you laugh frequently. The friendship between Elliot and Hazel really is what the film hangs on, and thankfully the two characters work well together. Kids will love watching them working through the North Pole try-outs and winging it as best as they can.

Running aside the main storyline, there’s an oddly sinister plot involving a shady woman who wants to use the animals at Elliot’s ranch as the source of her meat business. It’s surprisingly dark for an otherwise light and fluffy film. Honestly, I’m not really sure what that plot line adds to the movie and it may have actually been a little stronger without it. Had I seen that as a child, I’d probably have been traumatised.

The only extra on the release is a short making of featuring snippets of conversation with the film’s stars.

The Littlest Reindeer for the most part is a fun and enjoyable family film. It doesn’t break new ground or offer anything particularly new, but the loveable central characters should be plenty to hold the attention of the kids likely to watch it. There’s not a whole lot in there for adults in terms of double-entendre or clever jokes, but the film will be enjoyable nonetheless. The Littlest Reindeer isn’t going to be a classic but it’ll provide a nice alternative to the over-played Christmas films that dominate the TV throughout December.

Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Morena Baccarin, Samantha Bee, Martin Short, John Cleese, Jeff Dunham, George Buza Director: Jennifer Westcott Writers: Mark Van de Ven, Jennifer Westcott Certificate: PG Duration: 86 mins Released by: Lionsgate Release date: 29th October 2018

Frankenweenie DVD review https://entertainment-focus.com/2013/02/19/frankenweenie-dvd-review/ Tue, 19 Feb 2013 22:59:20 +0000 http://www.entertainment-focus.com/?post_type=film-review&p=9109 Tim Burton returns to his roots for this classic-inspired claymation.

When Victor’s pet dog Sparky is hit by a car, he decides to bring him back to life via a series of experiments powered by lightning. But when the bolt-necked Sparky comes back to life, he begins to wreck havoc on the neighbours. Victor has to convince his family and friends that he is still the same obedient dog as before, rather than the living dead.

Frankenweenie is the full length version of the original 1994 short film by Tim Burton, that he made whilst still working at Disney. Burton’s output have been very poor over recent years so it is surprising to see him plunder his back catalogue to make his new film, however it’s pleasing to report that this firmly put Burton back on track.

It has all the hallmarks that made Burton such a great and individual director, from the kooky storyline to the weird & wonderful secondary characters. We found ourselves laughing quite a lot throughout, especially at the cat called Whiskers, and for the first seventy minutes it is a really good fun Gothic tale (updated for a younger generation).

Then the last twenty minutes go all out crazy, but crazy in a fun way. It’s clear this is the part where Burton had the most fun making but it does leave you a little in awe of the subtlety from earlier in the film.

Claymation films take a long time to make and release, so we never see many outside of Aardman Productions. But Burton is schooled in this style and once again the models look fantastic and clearly have had a lot of time and love put into their creations. When it is done this well we don’t mind waiting a few years before another quality claymation gets released.

Frankenweenie shows that Burton is back to his Gothic best, and whilst this film is primarily aimed at children we feel adults who grew up the old Universal horror films of the 1950’s will love it even more. There is so much to enjoy that it’s alive!
