Recently, Gomez unleashed her summer-ready single ‘Single Soon’, the first new music she’s released in 2023. We thought it was the perfect time to pick 8 songs of Gomez’s that we can’t get enough of…

‘Come & Get It’ (2013)

Gomez’s transition from a Disney star to a bonafide pop sensation began with ‘Come & Get It’. This catchy and upbeat track was a massive hit, topping the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. Its sultry and confident tone marked a turning point in her career and showcased her growth as an artist.

The track reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a radio favourite, cementing her status as a pop icon. The accompanying music video, featuring Selena in a steamy and sophisticated light, added to the song’s allure.

‘Hands to Myself’ (2016)

‘Bad Liar’ (2017)

‘Bad Liar’ showcased Gomez’s versatility as an artist. The song was praised for its unique sound, incorporating elements from the Talking Heads’ classic ‘Psycho Killer’. It marked a departure from her previous work and earned critical acclaim. Gomez’s storytelling in the song’s lyrics and captivating music video captivated audiences worldwide.

‘It Ain’t Me’ (with Kygo) (2017)

Collaborating with Norwegian DJ Kygo, Gomez delivered “It Ain’t Me,” a melancholic yet uplifting track about a broken relationship. The song’s emotional depth and catchy melody resonated with listeners, earning it a spot in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

‘Back to You’ (2018)

‘Calm Down’ with Rema (2022)

Released in 2022, ‘Calm Down’ with Rema has become one of the biggest songs of the last 12 months. It’s infectious groove and Gomez’s vocals elevate Rema’s track. It’s no surprise that it’s been hanging around the charts for months.

A Rainy Day in New York review https://entertainment-focus.com/2020/06/14/a-rainy-day-in-new-york-review/ Sun, 14 Jun 2020 14:24:06 +0000 https://www.entertainment-focus.com/?p=1281215 Woody Allen is back in his comfort zone in this lightweight romantic comedy

Detractors of Woody Allen will find little to care for in his latest film, and probably a lot to complain about. But for fans of that very distinct style of neuroses and romanticism, A Rainy Day in New York is like a comfy pair of slippers. Nothing new or fancy about them, and you know they’ve walked over the same ground again and again, but they feel like home.

Which is exactly where Allen finds himself in this whimsical tale of young love. The jazzy old tunes, the autumnal colours, the long takes of unbroken dialogue, and a rogue’s gallery of artists, misfits and the elite of the Upper East Side. Allen is squarely back on home turf, with a vision of Manhattan so nostalgic it has been idolised, no, make that romanticised out of all proportion.

Timothée Chalamet is Gatsby Welles, the ne’er-do-well son of a wealthy New York family, currently studying at an upstate liberal arts college. He’s not really interested in his education, and prefers to spend most of his time gambling in high-stakes poker games. The only reason he hasn’t dropped out of college is because of his girlfriend Ashleigh (Elle Fanning). When she gets the opportunity to interview the acclaimed filmmaker Roland Pollard (Liev Schreiber) in New York for the college paper, Gatsby tags along and plans a romantic few days for them both in the city that never sleeps.

Unfortunately for Gatsby, Ashleigh’s encounter with the eccentric, alcoholic filmmaker sends their plans awry. As the rain pours down, the plot splits in two as Ashleigh finds herself caught up in a series of misadventures with older men—including beleaguered writer Ted (Jude Law) and movie heart-throb Francisco (Diego Luna)—whilst Gatsby, disgruntled that his romantic plans have been thwarted, reconnects with Chan (Selena Gomez), the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend.

Thematically, A Rainy Day in New York covers much of the same ground that Allen has explored in the past, but that is hardly a criticism. Most of the Woody Allen canon from the late-70s onwards have been variations on the same themes and subjects. The question that always hangs over his late-period films is whether they fall into the “classic Woody Allen” category (Midnight in Paris, Blue Jasmine, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) or the “creatively bereft” (Scoop, Cassandra’s Dream). A Rainy Day in New York is somewhere in the middle.

The characters are fun, and the cast are charming, delivering Allen’s dialogue and snappy one-liners with real zest. But the success rate of the dialogue is somewhere in the 50/50 range, as some of the lines—as you might expect when written by an 80-year old and spoken by a 20-year old—land with an almighty thud. The game cast, which also includes Rebecca Hall and Cherry Jones, have just enough breezy charm to pull you through.

The film looks beautiful however, with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and Allen’s long-time production designer Santo Loquasto giving the film a golden, dream-like aesthetic, that perfectly fits with Gatsby’s (and Allen’s) fantastical nostalgia for this city. It won’t change your life in any way, but A Rainy Day in New York is a perfectly passable way to spend 90-minutes.

Selena Gomez - Rare

Selena Gomez has established herself as a force in the world of music. Rising to prominence, musically at least, with Selena Gomez & The Scene in 2009, Selena stepped into the solo spotlight with her debut album Stars Dance in 2013. Her last studio album, Revival, arrived in 2015 and since then fans have been treated to the occasional single release such as Fetish and Bad Liar. A string of personal issues took Selena out of the spotlight the past few years but she finally resurfaced late last year with the release of Look at Her Now and Lose You to Love Me, two of her boldest singles to date.

The parent album for those songs, Rare, arrived earlier this month and it’s been a hit with critics and fans. The album credits read like a who’s who of contemporary music with a number of different songwriters and producers involved including Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, Jason Evigan, Billboard and Finneas. Armed with a whispery voice that doesn’t have a lot of power, Selena has been finely honing her music over her solo albums to create interesting pop that plays to her strengths rather than exposes her weaknesses. That may not sound like the biggest compliment but it is one, because by understanding her capabilities, and limits, Selena has crafted not only the best album she’s made to date but one of the best contemporary pop records in ages.

Opening track Rare, the title track, sets the tone perfectly. Selena practically whispers over a chunky beat allowing her unique tone to drift off effectively in places. Deliberately created for radio play, it’s one of the many strokes of genius that are packed into this 13-track set, which is always interesting and surprisingly devoid of filler. Second track Dance Again reflects on the mental health struggles Selena has gone through, seeing her emerging stronger and ready to smile again. The lyrics are those of a woman who has gone through hell and regained control at the other end of the journey. The pulsating beat can easily distract you from the important message Selena is delivering but I suggest pulling on your headphones and really listening to what she has to say.

The double punch of Look At Her Now and Lose You to Love Me is powerful. The dance-pop of Look At Her Now sees Selena being proud of moving through a tough break-up, while Lose You to Love Me is a stark piano-led track that sees Selena calling out an ex and realising she had to get out of that relationship before she could love herself again. Again, both of these are important messages that will resonate strongly with her core audience, and musically Selena has never been stronger.

The rest of Rare is full of ear worms that positions Selena as a leader in pop music rather than a follower. She doesn’t put a foot wrong whether she’s coyly singing around a Spanish rhythm on the seductive Ring, digging deep on the hypnotic Vulnerable or leading the charge on the shimmering pop of Kinda Crazy. The tribal beats of Let Me Get Me is one of the strongest tracks here and you can’t help but get swept away by it.

Elsewhere on the record the sparse Crowded Room featuring 6LACK sees Selena using her upper register to great effect, Fun bounces along at a breezy pace, and Cut You Off explores a harder R&B sound that really suits Selena’s gentle vocals. The album comes to a close with the Kid Cudi featuring A Sweeter Place, a song that sees Selena searching for a safe place to get away from the negativity that’s surrounded her for so long.

Rare is the exact record that Selena needed to come back with and it’s the record pop music needs right now. With the charts pretty much stuck in an ‘everything sounds the same’ rut, Selena is bringing some fresh, dynamic, interesting and different to the mix. Sure the album may have been put together by committee but her stamp and identity is all over it. I’ve listened to the album on repeat since it landed in my lap and I can’t remember the last time that happened to me with a pop record.

Track list: 1. Rare 2. Dance Again 3. Look At Her Now 4. Lose You to Love Me 5. Ring 6. Vulnerable 7. People You Know 8. Let Me Get Me 9. Crowded Room (feat 6LACK) 10. Kinda Crazy 11. Fun 12. Cut You Off 13. A Sweeter Place (feat. Kid Cudi) Record label: Interscope Release date: 10th January 2019 Buy Rare

I could take or leave Bad Neighbours, the 2014 original that delivered a funny but very forgetful comedy that didn’t leave any lasting impression. There were laughs to be had but the story rapidly lost momentum as the film went on. However it did pull in massive box-office money so a sequel was always likely to come. Bad Neighbours 2 is that rarest of beasts – a film that’s actually much better than the first and one that takes the time to craft a story that makes sense. Basically, everything you feared for a sequel to Bad Neighbours is quashed by a sharp script, hilarious set-pieces and some great ensemble performances.

We join Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) preparing for the imminent arrival of their second baby. With a new house already bought, the two have almost secured the sale of their old house. But their worst fears have come true when a brand new Sorority of teenage girls move in next door and threaten the sale of their home. With 30 days left before completing the sale, Mac and Kelly have to once again play hard-ball – not easy when the sorority have old fraternity nemesis Teddy (Zac Efron) pulling the strings.

Bad Neighbours 2

The set-up is obvious and that should have meant a pedestrian retreading of gags and situations from the first film. But Bad Neighbours 2 manages to avoid all of those trappings by making the hysterically funny script have genuine heart at its core. We learn all about how Teddy has struggled to fit into adult life, especially when his old Frat buddies are doing so well (including hilarious cameos from a returning Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse). He strives to find his place in the world and sees a lifeline when new girl Shelby (Chloë Grace Moretz) decides to form her own sorority.

This is the second success of the film – it makes Shelby’s plight actually believable. Yes, they are all annoying as hell and you want them to get their comeuppance, but the motive behind their chaos actually makes sense. Trying to be independent and champion the right of young women who don’t want to be sheep in the old college structure, Shelby and her new friends look to make a stand by doing things their way. Sadly, this clashes with Mac and Kelly.

Bad Neighbours 2

Seth Rogen and the brilliant Rose Byrne have such a wonderful chemistry here and they are the main reason why the film works so well. Speaking of dynamics, Rogen and Zac Efron also pick up right where they left off, with the two bouncing off one-another to create some hilarious comedy moments. Mac and Kelly’s best friends Jimmy and Paula (Ike Barinholtz and Carla Gallo) return to help them out and there’s a wealth of great cameos in the form of Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, Lisa Kudrow, Selena Gomez, Abbi Jacobson, Hannibal Buress and Billy Eichner.

With a decent story that makes you care about the characters, Bad Neighbours 2 defies the odds and comes in as one of the best comedy surprises of the year. With lots of brilliant gags, un-PC comedy and plenty of belly-laughs, this guarantees a great night out at the pictures. And if the writers continue to be a bit more fearless, I’d even welcome a third movie in this franchise.

Hotel Transylvania was released in 2012 and it grossed over $358 million at the worldwide box office. It’s no surprise then that three years later sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 arrived in cinemas. Mavis (Selena Gomez) and her husband Johnny (Andy Samberg) get married and have a half-human, half-vampire baby, Dennis (Asher Blinkoff). Worried about her son growing up surrounded by monsters, Mavis thinks it might be best if she and Johnny bring him up away from Transylvania. As Mavis and Johnny explore the possibility of life among the humans, Drac (Adam Sandler) babysits his grandson in an attempt to bring the monster in him out and convince Mavis to stay with the family.

The movie’s storyline is decent enough and sees Count Dracula and his family living in a world where monsters and humans are still living mostly separately. Things pick up a bit when Drac’s father Vlad (Mel Brooks) arrives and isn’t all too impressed that his son’s hotel now allows humans to reside there. His arrival also brings further complications for Mavis as her grandfather has no idea that her husband is human or that her son isn’t a pure vampire.

Featuring an all-star cast Hotel Transylvania 2 should be a knockout. The first film established Count Dracula and his family as an entertaining bunch, and while that film had its issues, I had high hopes that they’d be ironed out for this sequel. Unfortunately Hotel Transylvania 2 suffers from many of the same problems and it fails to be as clever or as funny as other films in the genre. The jokes are on the corny side and there are too few laughs for the adults that will not doubt sit through this film endlessly with their kids.

It should be noted that all of the cast do solid jobs voicing their characters. Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally bring plenty of entertainment as Johnny’s parents Mike and Linda. Adam Sandler also shines as Drac with David Spade stealing a few scenes as Griffin the Invisible Man.

Special features on the release include Fifth Harmony’s I’m in Love With a Monster music video, a character sketch gallery, and two feature commentaries with selected members of the cast and crew.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is an adequate movie but it’s nothing particularly special and that’s a real shame. When you compare it to a Pixar or DreamWorks outing, it simply doesn’t come close. It lacks the clever humour of those films despite its fantastic animation and stellar cast. Kids will still love it and to be honest it will be a hit with younger children as it’s very easy to watch and not in the least bit demanding.
